What is a Processor? Definition, Types, & How it Works

At this point, most of us have at least one smart device like a smartphone, computer, laptop, or smartwatch. But how many of you have examined the processor it has and is it the perfect processor that you need?

I hope some of you guys will be techies and familiar with the processor that your device has.

However, most of you won’t have an idea about the type of processor that you are using and the potential it has in handling the workloads.

What is a Processor in a Computer?

In simple terms, a Processor is the manager that makes your command happen on screen. For instance, if you are trying to play a song by clicking a file, the processor will access the file and play the respective song for you.

Technically speaking, a processor is an electronic circuit that drives the computer by responding to and processing commands given by the operating system.

Seemingly, the processor is programmed to perform arithmetical, logical, and input/output operations depending on the commands it receives from the user (OS).

Moreover, most people nowadays consider CPU (Central Processing Unit), GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), and microprocessor to be synonyms of the term Processor.

However, it is technically wrong as the CPU and GPU are one of the processors in a PC placed to perform different tasks.

Basic Elements of a Processor

Seemingly, a processor is made of four basic elements. They are;

  • Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU)
  • Floating Point Unit (FPU)
  • Registers
  • L1 and L2 cache memory

The ALU and FPU are responsible for carrying out basic & advanced arithmetic/logic operations on numbers and further, the results are sent to the Registers which stores the instructions. Whereas caches act similarly to RAM in storing copies of data for frequent use.

Indeed, the primary operations of a processor include Fetching, Decoding, and Executing.
