There comes a time when you’re grieving, overwhelmed, exhausted, worried, frustrated, or basically just running on empty.

We’ve all had those days. Something they’re months, weeks, or even just moments.

You know: The straw that broke the camel’s back. The last nail in the coffin. The boiling point. The point of no return.

So, what do we do?

We curl up in a warm blanket on the sofa, drinking a hot cup of chocolate (or your favorite drink), and relaxing. You start to feel comfortable, cuddled, and the world is behind shuttered doors for just a few minutes.

There are days when things get louder, heavier, and, well, just plain sharp angles.

It doesn’t matter what you do or where you turn; your nervous system is slipping into survival mode without you even telling it to.

When you look for a way to comfort yourself, you’re not distracting yourself from your life; you’re actually helping yourself stay in your life.

Sounds contradictory?

It’s not. Finding comfort for yourself is really important. A soft blanket, a warm drink, a quiet room, a slower pace, a good book, something that let’s your brain know that you’re safe enough to stop bracing. (You know what I mean. Your whole body gets stiff, and you didn’t even realize it until you move and everything’s locked up?)

Getting comfortable is not something to feel guilty about. Finding comfort is what keeps you from snapping in half.

When you have one of those days, finding comfort isn’t about you avoiding reality. You’re giving yourself enough breathing room to stand up and face reality tomorrow.

Try these:

  • Curl up in a soft blanket. (People say weighted blankets are great.)
  • Drink something warm.
  • Sit in a sunny spot.
  • Watch a favorite movie.
  • Take a walk.
  • Eat a favorite meal.
  • Read a book.
  • Wear a soft sweatshirt.

If you don’t have a lot of time, try:

  • Taking a slower breath
  • Step into a warmer light
  • Find a quieter space

Something that is small and gentle that will help make the world a little less “sharp”.

Most of the time, every problem can’t be solved in a day. And reaching for some comfort probably won’t solve anything. But it will make you relax, breathe easier, and let your mind settle enough to think better.

Finding comfort isn’t something to feel guilty about, but it will help make the day a little gentler than the day before. Remember, comfort helps.
