Why I love creating fictional characters ?

When we talk about writing, we often think of plots, imaginary worlds, or grand adventures. Yet, what fascinates me most isn’t the story itself.

It’s the characters.

For several years now, I’ve been creating characters for different universes. Some are courageous, others terrified. Some are heroes, others antagonists. They all have something in common, though: they begin with a simple idea.

Initially, it might be a question.

What if this woman could transform into a bear?

What if this man survived the end of the world?

What if this character hid a secret they refuse to reveal to everyone?

From there, the character begins to take shape. I think about their past, their fears, their dreams, their flaws. The more I write about them, the more real they become.

What I love about creating characters is that it forces you to understand others. To make a character believable, you have to ask yourself how they would react to anger, love, fear, or loneliness. You have to try to see the world through their eyes.

It’s an exercise in imagination, but also in empathy.

Sometimes, a character appears in a few minutes. Other times, it takes weeks to find a coherent personality for them. Sometimes, characters even change completely as the writing process unfolds.

That’s what makes the process so interesting: a character is never truly fixed.

Creating characters has also taught me to observe people. A way of speaking, a gesture, a habit, or a reaction can become a source of inspiration. Reality constantly feeds fiction.

I don’t yet know where this passion will lead me. Perhaps to writing, perhaps to journalism, perhaps to a completely different field.

But I know one thing: each character I create is a new story to discover.

And it’s this discovery that makes me want to continue.
