The Twelve: Chapter 6 — Shadows and Resolve

Shi’i — Light Branch (Age: 16)
I don’t care if I die. Let them come. Let them all come.
I’ll never be comrades with the Dark Branch. They laugh too much. Joke too much. Care too little. And now — they’re going to feel everything we’ve buried for generations.
They think everything is a joke. But I’m not laughing.
I wasn’t born yesterday. I know the stories — the ones my sister used to whisper late at night when the lights dimmed and our mother was too tired to correct her. How our branch once shined like the sun — respected for our innovation, wisdom, culture, and grace. The Light Branch were the balance keepers. The teachers of teachers. But something… someone… broke us.
The drugs didn’t just appear. They were planted. And we know exactly which branch watched us rot while they laughed in the shadows.
So today, in front of every branch, I’ll be their reckoning.
“I’ve had enough of your existence, light bright,” the dark branchman spat, my light searing into his eyes. “Do you even know who I am? Look around you, do you see anyone on your side? Or are you too high like the rest of your fallen branch?”
I looked around.
Darkness.
Nothing but shadow clones, pulsing with life. They surrounded me like vultures. My light barely kept them at bay. I was alone, surrounded, back pressed to the edge of death. But I refused to flinch.
“I am Kaeha,” the dark branchman grinned, stepping forward through the gloom. “Strongest of my generation… and your murderer.”
Before I could strike, something thick and cold like rope wrapped around my arms and yanked me into the air. I was pinned — arms stretched, light flickering. Beneath me, the shadows moved like creatures with minds of their own.
“Let him go!” a new voice boomed. Deep. Firm. Confident.
I turned my head, thinking the Morais had come. But no — this wasn’t a teacher. It was another Dark Brancher. His hair silver-white, his presence different. Calmer. Quieter.
“I’m disgusted to be part of this generation,” he said, stepping into the dome of shadows. “Our forefather would never approve of this.”
All eyes — both living and shadowed — turned toward him.
“Do something, then, Shona,” Kaeha smirked. “You’re just a descendant. Blood doesn’t make you a leader. Your family has as much blood on their hands as anyone.”
My body dropped. I landed on one knee, breathless but alive. The shadows slackened. My hands sparked with light again.
Wait. What did he just say?
Shona didn’t respond. Instead, he entered a stance — one foot forward, knees bent slightly, one palm toward the ground and the other extended outward. A black ring bloomed beneath him. The temperature dropped.
“None of you deserve to be here,” Shona said, quiet but deadly. “I’m sending you back into the shadows. Stay there… until you’re ready.”
My body surged with heat. This was it — my moment. I remembered what Zeke taught me about speed. What Lai drilled into me about focus. I closed my eyes and lit up from the inside out.
This is it. All or nothing. Light meets shadow.
But before I could move, the entire dome trembled. A sharp, deafening ring vibrated through my skull. Elements collided in a fury of motion. Fire crashed through the dome. Water spiraled in from above. Ice carved through the floor. And then — silence.
Four figures emerged.
Lai. Her body engulfed in flame, rising from her back like wings.
Querach. Frost pouring from his lips, ice blunt resting in hand. The air shimmered around him in flurries.
Ramah. Eyes wide open. Sightless, but more aware than anyone. Still. Grounded. A presence like gravity.
And then…
Shofet Gia. Water wrapped around her limbs like serpents. Eyes glowing with liquid fury. She didn’t walk. She glided.
With one motion, she lashed her watery whip through the air — striking us all. The force knocked breath from lungs. Then, she surrounded our heads in globes of water — drowning us where we stood.
I choked. My light flickered. My arms shook.
But even through the pain, her voice cut sharper than any blade.
“Children! Will you be the generation that breaks the chain that has bound us for millennia?! The weak link that shatters the 12?!”
She turned to me.
“Shi’i! Who do you think you are?! Twice now, you’ve stepped out of line. Do you think your pain is greater than ours? That your past is heavier than your future? Do you even know who you are anymore?!”
I couldn’t answer. The water held my breath hostage. But the question sank into my chest like a blade:
Who am I?
The smile I wore when I arrived… was gone. The laughter, the lightness — faded. Is this who I really am?
Or is this who the world has forced me to become?
Then, like a whisper in the storm, a familiar voice entered my thoughts.
“Shi’i…”
It was Ramah.
“You are at a crossroads. I’ve heard your heart… louder than you know. Yours and Shona’s. I will take both of you under my wing. I will teach you what only I can. Together, we’ll forge a new path — one that neither shadow nor light can claim alone.”
As his voice faded, the water around my face evaporated. The dome shattered. We fell to our knees, gasping for breath.
But the only thing echoing in my head…
“Your family has as much blood on their hands as anyone else.”
I turned my head and saw Shona standing across from me, just as breathless, just as shaken.
And somehow… We both knew.
This was only the beginning.
