About the Exam
GitHub offers four certification exams:
- GitHub Foundations,
- GitHub Actions,
- GitHub Administration,
- GitHub Advanced Security.
The Advanced Security exam has 75 multiple-choice questions, some with single answers and some with multiple correct answers. You get 2 hours to complete it.
In terms of difficulty level, I would say it is Intermediate.
Key Services to Master
- Secret Scanning — Detects sensitive information like API keys, passwords, or tokens in your repository and alerts administrators.
- Dependabot — Identifies dependencies with known vulnerabilities and suggests fixes.
- Code Scanning — Analyzes your code to find security vulnerabilities and coding errors.
Hands-On Practice
Before taking the exam, I used the following GitHub Skills courses:
- Introduction to Secret Scanning
- Introduction to Repository Management
- Secure Repository Supply Chain
- Introduction to CodeQL
I also practiced with mock exams:
Tips to Prepare
- Explore Code Scanning, Dependabot, and Secret Scanning in the GitHub UI.
- Learn CodeQL syntax and workflow files if you have time.
- Spend at least a month practicing hands-on before attempting the exam.
- Finally, refer to the official documentation thoroughly — many exam questions are directly based on it.
Trust me — these tools aren’t just for exams; they’re career fuel for anyone serious about building secure, professional-grade applications.

Final Advice
