THE HOUSE AT BLACKTHORN HILL (Chapter 7)

Chapter 7: The Society

The room fell silent. Only the crackle of the lantern disturbed the stillness.

Lucien stared at his sister.

“Who’s found the chamber?”

Eleanor didn’t answer. Instead, she hurried to the hidden bookshelf and pressed her hand against one of the wooden panels. A soft click echoed through the room. The passage behind her began to close. Stone scraped against stone until the entrance disappeared completely.

Only then did she turn around.

“It’ll slow him down.”

“Him?” Iris asked.

Eleanor nodded. “His name is Adrian Voss.”

The name meant nothing to Iris. But Lucien’s expression changed instantly.

“I thought he disappeared years ago.”

“So did everyone else.” Eleanor let out a tired sigh. “But Adrian never disappears. He waits.”

The words hung in the air.

Lucien folded his arms. “Enough riddles. Who is Adrian Voss?”

Eleanor looked toward the old desk. Her eyes settled on a leather-bound journal resting beneath a layer of dust. She picked it up carefully.

“This belonged to our grandfather.”

She placed it on the desk and opened the first page. Inside was a strange symbol. A circle divided into four equal parts. Around it were handwritten words.

The Society of the Four Keys

Iris frowned. “The Society?”

Eleanor nodded. “They’ve existed for centuries. They protect certain secrets.”

“What secrets?”

“The kind that can destroy lives if they fall into the wrong hands.”

Lucien looked unconvinced. “So this Society kidnapped you?”

“No. They saved me.”

Silence. That wasn’t the answer either of them expected.

Eleanor continued. “The night I disappeared, Adrian betrayed the Society. He wanted control.”

“Control of what?” Iris asked.

Eleanor looked toward the stone floor. “The chamber beneath Blackthorn Hill.”

Again. Everything led back to the chamber.

“The Society realized Adrian intended to open it. So they hid me. For twenty years.”

Lucien shook his head. “They hid you?”

“They protected me.”

“You could have written.”

“I tried.”

“You could have come home.”

“I couldn’t.”

Lucien looked away. He wanted to be angry. He really did. But seeing the exhaustion in Eleanor’s eyes made it impossible. She hadn’t been living. She’d been surviving.

Iris noticed a map spread across the desk. It showed Blackthorn Manor. At least… she thought it did. Because the map extended far beyond the house. Beneath it.

A maze of tunnels stretched under the hill. Dozens of passages. Hidden rooms. Underground chambers. The manor was only a fraction of the whole structure.

“How old is this place?” she whispered.

Eleanor answered quietly. “Older than Raven’s Hollow. Older than the country.”

The room fell silent again.

Then Lucien noticed something unusual. One tunnel had been marked with fresh red ink. Unlike the rest of the faded map. Someone had drawn the line recently.

It ended at a circular chamber. Beside it were two handwritten words.

Too Late.

A chill ran through Iris. “What does that mean?”

Eleanor’s face turned pale. “It means Adrian found it.”

Before anyone could speak —

A loud explosion echoed beneath the floor. The entire room shook violently. Books tumbled from the shelves. Dust poured from the ceiling. The lantern nearly fell from the desk.

Then came another sound. Not an explosion. A bell. Deep. Ancient. It rang only once. Yet its echo seemed endless.

Eleanor’s face lost all color. “No…”

Lucien caught her arm. “What is it?”

She looked directly at him. Fear filled her silver-gray eyes. “The bell only rings when the chamber opens.”

Silence. Nobody needed to ask which chamber. They already knew.

The one hidden beneath Blackthorn Hill. The one people had spent centuries protecting. The one Adrian Voss had spent twenty years trying to find.

A soft mechanical hum filled the room. The leather journal on the desk began to glow faintly. Its pages turned by themselves. Faster. And faster.

Until they stopped on a single page.

Across the center, written in faded ink, was one sentence:

When the bell rings, the last heir must choose.

Iris frowned. “The last heir?”

Eleanor slowly raised her eyes. She wasn’t looking at Lucien. She was looking at Iris.

And that frightened Iris more than anything that had happened so far.
