General Information about Gold
Gold is a chemical element with symbol Au and atomic number 79. In its purest form, it is a bright, slightly reddish yellow, dense, soft, malleable, and ductile metal. Gold is one of the least reactive chemical elements and is solid under standard conditions.
Gold Nanoparticles/Nanopowder and Applications

Gold nanoparticles/nanopowder are used as catalysts in several chemical reactions. The surface of a gold nanoparticle/nanopowder can be used for selective oxidation or in certain cases the surface can reduce a reaction. Gold nanoparticles/nanopowder are being developed for fuel cell applications. These technologies would be useful in the automotive and display industry. For photodynamic therapy Gold nanoparticles/nanopowder are also useful. Near-IR absorbing gold nanoparticles/nanopowder produce heat when excited by light at wavelengths from 700 to 800 nm. This enables these nanoparticles/nanopowder to eradicate targeted tumors. When light is applied to a tumor containing Gold nanoparticles/nanopowder, the particles rapidly heat up, killing tumor cells in a treatment also known as hyperthermia therapy. Gold nanoparticles/nanopowder can be used as an anti-biotic, anti-fungal, and anti-microbial agent when added in plastics, coatings, nanofibers and textiles. Gold nanoparticles/nanopowder are quite dense, thus allowing them to be used as probes for transmission electron microscopy. Gold nanoparticles/nanopowder are designed for use as conductors from printable inks to electronic chips. As the world of electronics become smaller, nanoparticles/nanopowder are important components in chip design. Nanoscale Gold nanoparticles/nanopowder are being used to connect resistors, conductors, and other elements of an electronic chip.
