I Say “I’ll Reply Later” and Forget for 3 Days

A small lie I keep telling myself — and somehow keep believing

It happens almost every time.

I get a message. I read it. I even think about what I should reply. And then I tell myself, “I’ll reply later.”

At that moment, it feels like a normal thing to say. Like I’ve already taken care of it in my head.

So I close the app and move on.

Maybe I'll start watching something. Or I get busy with small random things. Or I just scroll a bit. Nothing important.

But the message? It just quietly disappears from my mind.

Not because I don’t care. It just… stops existing in the front of my thoughts.

And then later in the day, I remember it for a second. I even feel like replying right away. But then I think, “I’ll do it properly in a bit.”

And that “bit” never really comes.

The next day is the same. I see the message again in my mind, feel a small guilt, and still don’t reply. Not on purpose. Just delay.

After a few days, it becomes a strange situation where replying now feels “late,” so I delay it even more.

And somehow, the longer I wait, the harder it gets to reply normally.

The funny part is, I always think I’ll remember later. But I don’t. Unless I see the message again, it just sits quietly in the background like it never existed.

Then one day, I finally reply, trying to act as if no time had passed. A simple “hey” or “sorry, I was busy”, like everything is normal.

But inside, I know it’s been days.

I used to think this was just me being careless. But now I think it’s just how my mind works. If something doesn’t need immediate action, it slowly slips away.

Still, I keep saying it. “I’ll reply later.”

Even when I know what usually happens after that.

If you’ve done this too, don’t worry — you’re not ignoring people, you’re just competing with your own memory.
