I Spent Weeks Testing Firebase Studio. Here’s My Honest Review (It’s Not What You Think)

When Google quietly dropped Firebase Studio, an AI-powered app builder, I didn’t expect much. After all, we’ve seen dozens of “AI app builders” promising no-code dreams and delivering half-baked drag-and-drop nightmares.

But I spent weeks building a gamified productivity app from scratch — something weird and nostalgic — and by the end, I had one thought:

Firebase Studio didn’t kill the competition, but it’s no slouch either.

Here’s the no-BS breakdown: what works, what’s broken, and whether this tool deserves a spot in your workflow.

So, What Is Firebase Studio?

Think of it as Google’s answer to Lovable, Bolt, or Replit — but with one big advantage: it’s built directly on Firebase, Google’s backend platform. That means you get powerful infrastructure — databases, user auth, cloud functions — without jumping through hoops or paying for five extra plugins.

The pitch? A full-stack AI workspace to prototype, build, and launch apps using AI agents.

The reality? A surprisingly capable, slightly chaotic playground for builders who don’t mind getting their hands dirty.

What I Tried to Build (And Why It Was Weird)

Instead of following one of those cookie-cutter “To-Do List” demos, I asked Firebase Studio to help me create:

An old-school, Pokémon-style productivity app where users gain XP for completing daily goals and battle an AI rival in real time.

Yeah, weird. But perfect for stress-testing the platform.

With a little help from ChatGPT, I fleshed out the concept, wrote a detailed prompt, threw in a pixel-art reference image, and specified backend requirements like Firestore support and Cloud Functions.

Firebase Studio responded with a project plan called Pixel Progress — complete with game mechanics, UI mockups, and even a schedule for XP resets. I was impressed.

Highlights: Where Firebase Studio Shines

✅ AI + Code Flexibility Unlike pure no-code tools, Firebase Studio lets you toggle between high-level AI instructions and full-on code editing inside a VS Code–style UI. Want AI to fix a bug? Click a button. Want to rewrite a function manually? Go wild.

✅ Smart Design Tools You can literally annotate a live app preview and say things like “make this button purple” or “add a footer.” It’s intuitive, and the changes apply instantly.

✅ Gemini Integration The AI coding assistant is built in, and you can switch between Gemini 2.0 Flash and Gemini 2.5 Pro. Ask it to explain files, add comments, debug logic — it’s genuinely useful (though not perfect).

✅ Live Previews + Mobile Testing Make your preview public, scan a QR code, and test your app live on your phone. It’s frictionless.

✅ Free (For Now) While competitors charge $20–$30/month, Firebase Studio is completely free. It might not stay that way forever, but it’s a killer deal for now.

And Now, the Pain Points

❌ Firebase Integration Isn’t Seamless You’d think Firebase Studio would set up Firestore and Auth for you. Nope. You’ll have to manually copy over config data and sometimes deal with backend setup errors.

❌ Buggy Error Fixes There’s a “Fix Error” button, which is both a blessing and a curse. Sometimes it works. Other times… it just breaks something else. The AI still needs babysitting.

❌ Limited Hosting You’ll need to link a cloud billing account to actually publish your app, which isn’t ideal for hobbyists or free users.

The Verdict: A Decent 5 out of 7 (Yes, That’s a Real Rating)

Firebase Studio isn’t perfect. It has quirks. It breaks. But it’s also fast, flexible, and way more powerful than I expected — especially for something still in early access.

It’s not replacing Replit, Levelable, or Bolt (yet). But if you’re into AI-assisted app prototyping with the option to dive into real code, it might just become your new favorite tool.

As for me? I’ll keep using it for weird one-day builds and AI side projects — and quietly rooting for Google to polish this thing into something legendary.
