From Draft to Defense: How I Completed My Thesis

From choosing a topic to surviving the defense

How do I even begin? Okay, from the top: I’m not going to sugarcoat it — it wasn’t easy (at least for me), but it also wasn’t as scary as I initially thought. My journey began with deciding on the title and figuring out what kind of research I wanted to pursue for my thesis.

If I’m being honest, I picked a topic that felt manageable for me — something that wouldn’t make the process more complicated than it already is. I also made sure to choose an advisor who I thought would be a good match for my research. Thankfully, I got advisors that supportive, who was always open to my questions and helped guide me whenever I got stuck.

For me, the hardest part was collecting and processing the data. This included lab work to test chemical properties, which, let me tell you, was no joke. Data collection drained my energy and ate up so much time, while the lab work required an insane amount of patience and attention to detail. And of course, things didn’t always go smoothly — some results weren’t great, test solutions would go bad, and I faced all sorts of random setbacks.

But hey, I survived. So, here are my tips to help you get through it too:

1. Stay on Track with Your Advisor

Frequent consultations with your advisor are key. Meet them as often as you can to make sure every step you take is on the right track. This also helps you fix any mistakes early and add anything you might’ve missed. I know setting up meetings isn’t always easy, but trust me, it’s worth the effort. Just keep pushing — your thesis needs their guidance to move forward!

2. Limit “Thesis Hangouts” with Friends

This might sound harsh, but hear me out. I didn’t rely too much on my friends for thesis discussions. Sure, I talked to them occasionally, but spending too much time with friends often led to distractions for me. So, my advice? Focus on yourself and your work. Too much group time can pull you away from your actual progress.

3. Build a Solid Support System

Writing a thesis can mess with your mental health, so having a support system is a lifesaver. You don’t need a huge circle — just people who truly listen and cheer you on. For me, my family and my partner were my rocks. They were always there when I felt stressed and overwhelmed.

4. Read, Read, and Then Read Some More

Be prepared to dive deep into research. You’ll need a ton of journal articles and books to back up your arguments. If you can’t find what you need right away, keep searching. Look at local journals, international journals — whatever it takes to find the right sources. It’s all part of the process.

5. Get Ready for the Big Day (Your Thesis Defense)

When your thesis is finally ready for defense, it’s time to prepare yourself. First things first: take care of your health. Sleep well and don’t let yourself get sick because you’ll need all the energy you can get.

Next, prep your material. Know your thesis inside and out. Understand every section you wrote, and anticipate potential questions, especially about your methodology and findings. Practicing and simulating the defense can be incredibly helpful. I personally went through my thesis again and identified points that could invite questions, which helped me prepare answers in advance. Lastly, don’t forget to pray and surrender the results to fate. Stay positive and believe in yourself — you’ve got this!

Alhamdulillah, I made it through and couldn’t be prouder of what I accomplished. To all of you still grinding away on your thesis, you can do this! It might feel impossible at times, but trust me, it’ll be worth it in the end.

If I could get through it, so can you!

Until next time…
