But here’s the truth: my VARC score isn’t magical; it’s the result of consistent, intelligent reading habits from childhood. If you think you can’t achieve similar results because you haven’t been a voracious reader, don’t worry. You can start now and follow a structured approach to catch up.​

Why Most CAT Aspirants Fail

Before talking about solutions, it is important to understand why so many aspirants fail to reach their potential in CAT.​

1. Lack of Exam Understanding

Most candidates don’t really understand what the CAT tests or what its requirements are. They either wait until the last few months to figure it out or spend the early months preparing blindly without a clear roadmap.​

The problem is simple: you have no baseline. You don’t know:

• What the actual exam looks like
• Where you currently stand
• What a competitive score demands​

2. Self-Assessment Gap

Many aspirants avoid honestly assessing their capability. They do not want to face their weaknesses, so they never build a realistic plan.​

3. Misplaced Effort

Instead of leveraging their inherent strengths, they focus only on weak areas and ignore where they can score big.​

For example, VARC was my strength, so I played accordingly and scored more than many candidates through VARC alone.​

4. Lack of Structured Strategy

Without a clear, stepwise strategy, preparation becomes random, unmeasurable, and demotivating.​

Solutions: The Roadmap to Success

PART 1: VARC (Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension)

Step 1: Start With a Past Year Paper

• Take one official past year CAT paper.
• Solve it in one sitting (around 4 hours).
• Do not worry if your score is low or even negative.
• The goal is to understand the pattern, not to feel good about your marks.​

I did not do this at the start, and that kept me behind initially. If you do it early, you will move ahead faster.​

Step 2: Identify Your Inherent Strength

Most people can improve VARC because they have already been exposed to English for years:

• School textbooks in English
• English as the medium for most subjects
• Movies, music, and online content in or influenced by English​

Your base is stronger than you think; it just needs to be activated.​

Step 3: Build Reading Habits the Right Way

• Pick any book, even a simple one.
• For 2 months, read consistently from books you genuinely enjoy.
• After that, transition to slightly advanced content like essays from Aeon or Smithsonian.​

Start with easy material, then gradually increase the difficulty.​

Step 4: Daily VARC Strategy

• Read for 1 hour daily.
• Attempt 4 RC passages every day without fail.
• Analyze each RC deeply:
• Why was an answer wrong?
• What was the central idea?
• How were the options framed to confuse you?​

PART 2: DILR (Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning)

DILR is new for most aspirants. Some people have better natural logical skills, but this section can be developed with consistent practice.​

Recommended Resource

Using a good practice portal helps. One such resource is the IMS portal, which costs around ₹4,000 and provides a structured set of DILR problems.​

Progressive Practice Plan

• First 2 months:
• Solve 2 sets per day.
• Focus on understanding and accuracy.
• Next 2 months:
• Solve 5 sets per day.
• Build speed while maintaining accuracy.​
• After 4 months:
• Start taking 1 sectional test per day for as long as needed.
• Use these to manage time and pressure.​

Golden Rule: Avoid the Calculator

• Do not use a calculator on any practice set.
• Relying on it will stop you from developing the speed and intuition required in the real exam.​

PART 3: Quantitative Aptitude (QA)

To be transparent, my QA marks were not as strong as my VARC. I know people who scored 60+ in QA in mocks but could not cross 10 in the actual exam, which shows the gap between mock performance and real performance if the mindset and consistency are not right.​

I procrastinated on QA for almost 6 months, which was a major mistake. The key lesson: do not delay QA preparation; start early and stay consistent.​

A detailed QA strategy can be broken down separately, and expanding it into its own guide makes sense.​

The Meta-Strategy: Tying Everything Together

Irrespective of section, this is how to approach CAT as a whole:​

• Understand yourself first with a diagnostic test.
• Play to your strengths while gradually improving weaknesses.
• Track progress through mocks and sectionals, not just by feelings.
• Adjust your preparation style if something isn’t working.
• Stay consistent rather than extreme.
