Choose your “best fit” Tango Instructor
Why perfect research alone won’t find your perfect tango teacher?
Choose your “best fit” Tango Instructor
Why perfect research alone won’t find your perfect tango teacher?
As a former student myself, let me share how to choose the right tango teacher — if you ever ask.
Step 1: Know Yourself First
(Honesty is your compass) Ask yourself:
Time: How does your schedule breathe? Can you carve space for practice?
Body: What’s your physical truth? Do gentle slopes leave you winded? Does low blood sugar dim your energy when you move?
Resilience: How do you learn? Thrive on encouragement? Or wilt under sternness? If criticism bruises you, avoid strict teachers.
Learning Style: When do you absorb fastest? Draw from past dance or sports experiences — be ruthlessly honest.
Aesthetics: Does the teacher’s presence matter? If grace or charm inspires you, own that preference.
Non-negotiables: What’s sacred in a class? Connection? Technique? Joy? Name it.
Budget: What can you invest? Honor your financial boundaries.
Teaching Voice: What pedagogy sings to you? Visual demos? Verbal cues? Hands-on guidance?
Why Tango?: What calls you here? A fleeting romance with movement? Or a lifelong dialogue with the dance?
Step 2: Know Your Teachers
(The market is your mirror)
Map the Landscape: Circle every tango teacher in your city — Google Maps is your ally.
Watch & Feel: Study their videos. Does their movement whisper to your soul? Observe their students: What future might you wear?
Trial as Ritual: Call. Book. Arrive early. Lateness steals clarity.
Immerse Fully: In trial classes, show up wholly present. What fits others may chafe you.
Measure Progress: Track growth objectively (“I mastered this step”), but honor subjective joy (“This class felt like home”).
Embrace Detours: Early stumbles? They’re part of the dance. Wrong doors lead to right rooms.
Trust Your Gut: Your resonance matters more than prestige. If it fits — cherish it. ‼️
Walk Away Wisely: If intuition hums “no,” retreat. Not every teacher holds your key.
A Deeper Truth
Every choice roots in your values — tango or otherwise. Copying others’ paths without walking your own? That’s window-shopping life. Expecting identical blooms from borrowed seeds? That’s forgetting your soil is unique. Remember: No one can dance this dance for you. P.S. From My Heart
My podcast, Tango Stories in China, unveils teachers’ journeys. Listen. Feel their essence.
Self-ownership is the gift I give my students: Dare to choose. Dare to question. Dare to own your steps.
Dear aspiring dancers — what’s your #1 criterion for choosing a teacher? Share your wisdom below. Let’s learn from each other’s truths.
