Today, I’m doing a spoiler-free-as-possible review of the entire White Harbor Trilogy by the talented and fantastic Carlos E. Rivera.

I stumbled across Carlos’s work via Facebook, just as I started to really become an active part of the indie author community. There are so many awesome horror authors out there and are so worth checking out but, we are going to focus on Carlos and his writing.

I was first draw to the White Harbor trilogy by many things. Mostly, it was when I heard that it was an eldritch horror. That’s always a sure way to get me interested in something. I wasn’t reading a book at the time so, I decided to give it a little look-see.

The first book, The Local Truth

I was hooked as soon as I started reading. The characters are well written. I know I started to care about them immediately. There are also several little crumbs spread throughout the first book. It’s enough to keep you interested but, doesn’t give it all away.

It gets pretty dark- as expected in any eldritch horror.

I got the version of the book that had “I am the Door: A White Harbor Story” attached to the first book, “The Local Truth”. It really rounded out the length of the book and really let you know more about what was going on.

The second book in the White Harbor Trilogy, “Blackout” picks up directly after the ending of the first book.

Things start to get crazy. There’s a lot of character development. Secrets are brought out in the open. As far as sequels go, it was really good! It built off of the first book and went beyond.

As for the third book, oh boy, oh boy! All hell breaks loose. I thought the second one was dark but, it doesn’t hold a candle to the dark and depraved depths that “A Hole in the World” falls, too. I mean this in the best way possible.

Despite two volumes of character development, there’s even more. And wow! It takes so many turns I didn’t see coming. And the lore goes so hard! There’s a lot in this third book that thoroughly disturbed me.

Now, throughout the whole series, there’s a lot of humor in the writing. Much of it is very dark in nature (of course). There’s also a wonderful inclusion of LGBTQIA+ characters. It made me, personally, very happy to see.

Now, beyond the things I have said, I can’t say more if I want to keep this spoiler free.

The White Harbor Trilogy isn’t for everyone but, it’s so worth it to read if you can stomach the disturbing, vile things throughout. I love the characters so much! I think about them often.
