Don’t get me wrong here — you should go to the sauna, but with the emphasis on the total experience, not for the alleged health benefits.
And until you do, you probably never will get all the health benefits, if iany.
Americans are a funny lot. They absolutely love fads and gimmicks, fortunes are made on myths, and the mayhem of misinformation and selling snake oil. Yes, there are some studies, but that’s it — just studies.
I want to make something very clear about Sauna.
When you try to extract the benefits and focus on one very small part, the peanut of health benefits, the elephant known as Sauna is lost in the weeds.
And like all fads, the baby is thrown out with the bathwater after the Sauna Health Charlatans have made their money and moved on.
People who enjoy the Sauna for full authenticity will grow fonder and make the sauna part of their life.
Native Americans thought of their sweat culture in two ways: recreational and holy. Wooden Leg gives one of the best Native American accounts of sweat culture in early North America.
I have researched the Native American and Finnish sweat culture, and the similarities are undeniable. But the only thing I found about health and sweat was a cliche, “If the heat and tar don’t cure you, you are going to die.”
Sweat culture happens as a result of practicing a millennia’s old customs, with the purpose of the ancestors and the camaraderie of the living.
Turning it into a fad over health benefits may cause a wrinkle in the fabric of the universe and create certain terrible things to happen.
The worst thing to happen is that the person thought they were experiencing Sauna while not actually experiencing Sauna. The Sauna gods are definitely getting pissed about this. They may even create a special Karma for the infidels; of course, the Karma will be much worse for the people who tricked these folks.
The next worst thing is that people have a terrible experience, hurt their health in some way, and blame it on the Sauna. The Sauna that was not a sauna! This really pisses off the sauna gods! How would you like to get blamed for something you didn’t do?
When we decide to enter the sauna culture, we should do it with honor of the real tradition in mind. We should keep ourselves pure for the Sauna gods.
When we please the gods of Sauna and honor Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water, the Sauna gods bless us. When we seek out the divine and authentic experience and teach others, we are given the blessing of sweat culture.
The complete experience creates an experience that is unique and authentic, which must be enjoyed to the fullest.
I don’t know if there are Sauna gods or not. But I have met many people who hated Sauna. After asking a few questions about the “sauna,” I could tell they had no idea what a sauna truly was. That made me very sad. Whats worse is these people were trying to boost their health and that was the only reason.
So if you want to learn Sauna, don’t listen to the buzz of myth, seek out the authentic and real thing. I am putting my money on your experience will be rewarding, relaxing, and fulfilling in ways you never experienced, maybe even healthy.
