The Woman Who Spoke Frankly About Her Second Marriage to the Prophet

A woman came to the Prophet (ﷺ) complaining that her second husband was impotent, hoping to return to her first husband, but the Prophet (ﷺ) explained the Islamic ruling that prevents this.

It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: “The wife of Rifa’ah Al-Qurazi came to the Prophet when Abu Bakr was with him, and she said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! I was married to Rifa’ah Al-Qurazi and he divorced me, and made it irrevocable. Then I married ‘Abdur-Rahman bin Az-Zabir, and by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, what he has is like this fringe;’ and she held up a fringe of her Jilbab. Khalid bin Sa’eed was at the door and he did not let him in. He said: ‘O Abu Bakr? Do you not hear this woman speaking in such an audacious manner in the presence of the Messenger of Allah?’ He said: ‘Do you want to go back to Rifa’ah? No, not until you taste his sweetness and he tastes your sweetness.’”

Hammad bin Zaid said: “I said to Ayyub: ‘Do you know anyone who said concerning the phrase ‘It is up to you’ that it is equivalent to three (divorces) except Al-Hasan?’ He said: ‘No.’ Then he said: ‘O Allah! Grant forgiveness, sorry.’” Qatadah narrated to me from Kathir the freed slave of Ibn Samurah, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurairah, that the Prophet said: “Three.” I met Kathir and asked him, and he did not know of it. I went back to Qatadah and told him, and he said: “He forgot.”

I provide you 10 pieces of evidence from the Qur’an about Munafiq.

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

A

Munafiq (Hypocrite), one who practices Islam by showing others that he/she follows Islam but in their heart they disbelieve Islam, he\she make deception, that is called Munafiq (Hypocrite).

So, Who are the Munafiqs? There are some hints about munafiqs. Those who makes many many false swear. They enjoin what is wrong and forbid what is right. Those who are quarrelsome. Those who make deception & fraud, showing laziness in worship. Making fun of believers. Wait for the believers to be put (believers) in danger. Making friends with infidels (Kafir\Disbelievers). The hypocrites are liars. They propagate rumors. In difficult times, Severing ties with believers.

These above hints are from Qur’an. So Allah (S.W.T) has given us information about hypocrites.

The verses of the Qur’an are below (about Munafiq). I provide you 10 pieces of evidence from the Qur’an.

1. Those who makes many many false swear

Al-Munafiqun(The Hypocrites) (63:2)

ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ أَيْمَـٰنَهُمْ جُنَّةًۭ فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ سَآءَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ ٢

They have taken their oaths as a cover, so they averted [people] from the way of Allāh. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing.

2. They enjoin what is wrong and forbid what is right

At-Tawbah (The Repentance) (9:67)

ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتُ بَعْضُهُم مِّنۢ بَعْضٍۢ ۚ يَأْمُرُونَ بِٱلْمُنكَرِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَقْبِضُونَ أَيْدِيَهُمْ ۚ نَسُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ فَنَسِيَهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ هُمُ ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَ ٦٧

The hypocrite men and hypocrite women are of one another. They enjoin what is wrong and forbid what is right and close their hands. They have forgotten Allāh, so He has forgotten them [accordingly]. Indeed, the hypocrites — it is they who are the defiantly disobedient.

3. Those who are quarrelsome

Al-Baqarah (The Cow) (2:204)

وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يُعْجِبُكَ قَوْلُهُۥ فِى ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَيُشْهِدُ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ مَا فِى قَلْبِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَلَدُّ ٱلْخِصَامِ ٢٠٤

And of the people is he whose speech pleases you in worldly life, and he calls Allāh to witness as to what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest of opponents.

4. Those who make deception & fraud, showing laziness in worship.

An-Nisa (The Women) (4:142)

إِنَّ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ يُخَـٰدِعُونَ ٱللَّهَ وَهُوَ خَـٰدِعُهُمْ وَإِذَا قَامُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ قَامُوا۟ كُسَالَىٰ يُرَآءُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ وَلَا يَذْكُرُونَ ٱللَّهَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًۭا ١٤٢

Indeed, the hypocrites [think to] deceive Allāh, but He is deceiving them. And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing [themselves to] the people and not remembering Allāh except a little,

5. Making fun of believers

At-Tawbah (The Repentance) (9:79)

ٱلَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ ٱلْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِى ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ وَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ إِلَّا جُهْدَهُمْ فَيَسْخَرُونَ مِنْهُمْ ۙ سَخِرَ ٱللَّهُ مِنْهُمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ ٧٩

Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning [their] charities and [criticize] the ones who find nothing [to spend] except their effort, so they ridicule them — Allāh will ridicule them, and they will have a painful punishment.

6. Wait for the believers to be put (believers) in danger

An-Nisa (The Women) (4:141)

ٱلَّذِينَ يَتَرَبَّصُونَ بِكُمْ فَإِن كَانَ لَكُمْ فَتْحٌۭ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ قَالُوٓا۟ أَلَمْ نَكُن مَّعَكُمْ وَإِن كَانَ لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ نَصِيبٌۭ قَالُوٓا۟ أَلَمْ نَسْتَحْوِذْ عَلَيْكُمْ وَنَمْنَعْكُم مِّنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۚ فَٱللَّهُ يَحْكُمُ بَيْنَكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۗ وَلَن يَجْعَلَ ٱللَّهُ لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ سَبِيلًا ١٤١

Those who wait [and watch] you. Then if you gain a victory from Allāh, they say, “Were we not with you?” But if the disbelievers have a success, they say [to them], “Did we not gain the advantage over you, but we protected you from the believers?” Allāh will judge between [all of] you on the Day of Resurrection, and never will Allāh give the disbelievers over the believers a way [to overcome them].

7. Making friends with infidels (Kafir\Disbelievers)

An-Nisa (The Women) (4:139)

ٱلَّذِينَ يَتَّخِذُونَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ أَوْلِيَآءَ مِن دُونِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۚ أَيَبْتَغُونَ عِندَهُمُ ٱلْعِزَّةَ فَإِنَّ ٱلْعِزَّةَ لِلَّهِ جَمِيعًۭا ١٣٩

Those who take disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do they seek with them honor [through power]? But indeed, honor belongs to Allāh entirely.

8. The hypocrites are liars

Al-Munafiqun (The Hypocrites) (63:1)

إِذَا جَآءَكَ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ قَالُوا۟ نَشْهَدُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُهُۥ وَٱللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ إِنَّ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ١

When the hypocrites come to you, [O Muḥammad], they say, “We testify that you are the Messenger of Allāh.” And Allāh knows that you are His Messenger, and Allāh testifies that the hypocrites are liars.

9. They propagate rumors

An-Nisa (The Women) (4:83)

وَإِذَا جَآءَهُمْ أَمْرٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْأَمْنِ أَوِ ٱلْخَوْفِ أَذَاعُوا۟ بِهِۦ ۖ وَلَوْ رَدُّوهُ إِلَى ٱلرَّسُولِ وَإِلَىٰٓ أُو۟لِى ٱلْأَمْرِ مِنْهُمْ لَعَلِمَهُ ٱلَّذِينَ يَسْتَنۢبِطُونَهُۥ مِنْهُمْ ۗ وَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُۥ لَٱتَّبَعْتُمُ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًۭا ٨٣

And when there comes to them something [i.e., information] about [public] security or fear, they spread it around. But if they had referred it back to the Messenger or to those of authority among them, then the ones who [can] draw correct conclusions from it would have known about it. And if not for the favor of Allāh upon you and His mercy, you would have followed Satan, except for a few.

10. In difficult times, Severing ties with believers

Al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) (22:11)

وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَعْبُدُ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ حَرْفٍۢ ۖ فَإِنْ أَصَابَهُۥ خَيْرٌ ٱطْمَأَنَّ بِهِۦ ۖ وَإِنْ أَصَابَتْهُ فِتْنَةٌ ٱنقَلَبَ عَلَىٰ وَجْهِهِۦ خَسِرَ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْخُسْرَانُ ٱلْمُبِينُ ١١

And of the people is he who worships Allāh on an edge. If he is touched by good, he is reassured by it; but if he is struck by trial, he turns on his face [to unbelief]. He has lost [this] world and the Hereafter. That is what is the manifest loss.

Narrated Aws ibn Hudhayfah: We came upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in a deputation of Thaqif. The signatories of the pact came to al-Mughirah ibn Shu’bah as his guests. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) made Banu-Malik stay in a tent of his. Musaddad’s version says: He was in the deputation of Thaqif which came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He used to visit and have a talk with us every day after the night prayer. The version of AbuSa’id says: He remained standing for such a long time (talking to us) that he put his weight sometimes on one leg and sometimes on the other due to his long stay. He mostly told us how his people, the Quraysh, behaved with him. He would say: We were not equal; we were weak and degraded at Mecca (according to Musaddad’s version). When we came over to Medina the fighting began between us; sometimes we overcome them and at other times they overcome us. One night he came late and did not come at the time he used to come. We asked him: You came late tonight? He said: I could not recite the fixed part of the Qur’an that I used to recite every day. I disliked to come till I had completed it. Aws said: I asked the companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): How do you divide the Qur’an for daily recitation? They said: Three surahs, five surahs, eleven surahs, thirteen surahs’ mufassal surahs. Abu Dawud said: The version of Abu Sa’id is complete.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-’As: Wahb ibn Munabbih said: Abdullah ibn Amr asked the Prophet (ﷺ); In how many days should one complete the recitation of the Qur’an? He said: In forty days. He then said: In one month. He again said: In twenty days. He then said: In fifteen days. He then said: In ten days. Finally he said: In seven days.

Abdullah bin ‘Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: My father ‘Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) said: When (his daughter) Hafsah (May Allah be pleased with her) became a widow, I met ‘Uthman bin ‘Affan (May Allah be pleased with him) and offered Hafsah for marriage to him. ‘Uthman said: “I shall think over the matter.” I waited for a few days and then ‘Uthman met me and said: “It occurred to me that I should not marry at present.” Then I met Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him) and said to him: “If you are willing, I shall marry my daughter Hafsah to you.” Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him) remained silent and did not utter any word to me in reply. I grew more angry with him than with ‘Uthman. I had waited for only a few days when Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) asked for her hand in marriage and I married her to him. Thereafter, I met Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him) who said, “Perhaps you were angry with me when you offered Hafsah to me and I said nothing in reply.” I said, “Yes, that is so.” He said, “Nothing stopped me to respond to your offer except that I knew that Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had mentioned her and I could not disclose the secret of Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). Had Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) left her, I would have accepted her.” [Al-Bukhari].

Thabit (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) said: Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to me while I was playing with the boys. He greeted us and sent me on an errand. This delayed my return to my mother. When I came to her, she asked, “What detained you?” I said; “Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent me on an errand.” She asked, “What was it?” I said, “It is a secret.” My mother said; “Do not disclose to anyone the secret of Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).” Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) said to Thabit (May Allah be pleased with him): By Allah, were I to tell it to anyone I would have told you. [Muslim].
