Have you ever felt like you’re behind in life ? That you haven’t reached the milestones you should have by now? Maybe you’ve caught yourself thinking, “I should be further along in my career, my finances, or my personal life.”
If so, you’re not alone. But here’s what I’ve learned: your life’s timing isn’t dependent on society’s schedule. It’s built on purpose, YOUR PURPOSE, and aligned with where you’re meant to be, even when it doesn’t feel like it.
College graduation — the moment I thought I had my whole life planned.
My Story: Chasing the Timeline That Wasn’t Mine
For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a pediatrician. I was intentional about every step: my grades, my test scores, all to secure a path to medical school.
By seventh grade, I was already mapping out my future. My state required standardized testing to qualify for top high schools, and I had my eyes set on two of the best. But life had other plans.
When Hurricane Katrina hit, my family’s world shifted, and so did my educational path. I ended up at a different high school, determined to stay focused on my dream. I worked hard, took honors classes, and graduated in the top 10 of my class with a 4.2 GPA.
I went to college on a full ride, earning several scholarships and entered an early medical-school selection program my sophomore year at Boston University. Then my plan was in motion. As I graduated at 22, I made a choice that changed everything: I decided not to go to medical school.
For years after that, I wrestled with a quiet guilt, a sense that I’d missed my life’s “timeline.” Now, at 33, I realized that chasing timelines wasn’t the same as living in alignment and that realization changed how I see everything.
Reframe: Your Life’s Timing Isn’t Late, It’s Aligned
Where you are today isn’t an accident. Even if it feels uncertain, it’s part of your preparation. Every detour, delay, or closed door is redirecting you toward something more aligned with who you truly are.
Life’s timing isn’t meant to be identical for everyone. We can’t lead our lives in parallel with someone else’s standard because then we’ll miss the very purpose we were designed to fulfill.
Section 1: What “Being Behind” Really Means
Feeling behind usually comes from comparing yourself to societal timelines. Those invisible checklists that say where you “should” be by certain ages:
- 18 → graduate high school
- 21 → finish college
- 25 → have a career
- 30 → buy a house
- 35 → start a family
But these milestones ignore reality things like economic hardship, family dynamics, health, and personal calling. The truth is: everyone falls “behind” on someone else’s scale.
That’s because the standard itself is outdated. It doesn’t fit the complexity of real life.

Section 2: Create Your Own Milestones
The first step toward freedom is to define what success actually means to you.
Ask yourself:
- What do I value most? Peace, Purpose, Family, Impact, or Creativity?
- What kind of life do I want to build ? Not just what it looks like, but what it feels like?
- What do I want to contribute to the world around me?
Once you’ve answered that, map your own lane.
Grab a notepad and write down your long-term intentions on the person you want to become, not just what you want to achieve. Then, work backward: identify one small action that moves you closer to that vision.
That’s called reverse goal-setting. It turns big dreams into doable steps, all built on your timing, not theirs.

Section 3: Exit the Rat Race and Embrace Yourself
The final step is to remove yourself from the performative race and choose gratitude for where you are.
It’s human to crave what we don’t have. But constantly chasing the next thing leads to exhaustion and emptiness. Real fulfillment begins when you stop performing for validation and start appreciating your journey as it unfolds.
You are allowed to evolve at your own pace. You are allowed to grow quietly. You are allowed to be proud of progress that isn’t visible online.
No one can live the life you were meant to lead and that’s your greatest advantage.

Conclusion: Peace Isn’t Passive
Peace isn’t passive. It’s an active choice. The decision not to race against other people’s timelines gives you more of that active peace.
Being “behind” isn’t failure; it’s an invitation to realign. When you stop performing progress and start living in purpose, you’ll realize that your life has been right on time all along.
