What’s in the Stinky Bag?

Mikaela held her breath as she walked home. Foul odors in the garbage-lined alley permeated as if an offensive essential oil diffuser was plugged into the fire hydrant.
Gasping from holding her breath too long, Mikaela’s eyes burned from the putrid smells; she needed to quicken her pace to a jog in order to escape the odors that were already clinging to her sweatshirt.
The streetlamp was shining directly on a bag at the end of the alley. Mikaela wondered what was inside the bag as she approached it cautiously.
The malodorous stench emanating from the bag suddenly made her nauseous. She tried to run but stopped as she began retching in the alley.
A few minutes later, Mikaela took some sips from her water bottle and started feeling better. But when she looked down the alley, she saw three cats picking at the bag that had made her sick. Once again, Mikaela started feeling ill — as she imagined how sick the cats would be if they opened that disgusting bag.
She grabbed two trashcan lids to distract the cats, banging them together like cymbals in a band.
And then she ran — never discovering what was in the bag.
LESSONS: 1. Don’t forget the saying “Curiosity killed the cat!” 2. When something doesn’t feel or smell right, don’t just walk away — run!
