When the Old Door Stops Being Secret

Recovery does not always look like pouring the whole bottle down the sink.
Sometimes that would be too clean.
Too cinematic.
Too easy to turn into a story about becoming new.
Real change is often uglier and less satisfying.
The bottle remains.
Not hidden behind rice. Not protected by secrecy. Not turned into a demon. Not turned into a symbol of victory.
Just placed in plain sight.
A dumb brown object with a bad history.
That sounds risky because it is.
But secrets are doors.
A hidden bottle can become an emergency exit in the mind. A private passage back to the old version of yourself. A way out that no one has to know about.
So sometimes the work is not destroying the door.
Sometimes the work is labeling it correctly.
Not a door.
Not freedom.
Not comfort.
Not romance.
Just glass.
Just a choice.
Just an old habit trying to keep architectural rights inside your life.
And the day is not saved by courage.
It is saved by smaller things:
sparkling water bought instead of whiskey. a phone call made before the moment becomes a secret. a basil plant trimmed even though it looks mostly dead. two poor words sent without performance. ice allowed to be only ice.
No applause.
No transformation music.
Just one full day in the apartment without making the old exit useful.
Which is not much.
And also not nothing.
