Something Isn’t Right With Marriages These Days..

A woman who is unhappy with her husband after her arrange marriage
Over the last few years, we have read thousands of stories on The Open Diary (earlier known as The Confession Box).
People write about anxiety, career struggles, loneliness, family issues, self-doubt, and many other challenges. But one thing surprised us. Nearly 80% of the stories we receive on The Open Diary are related to relationships and marriage. Not money. Not careers. Not health. Relationships.
A wife feeling unheard. A husband feeling unappreciated. Someone questioning whether they married the right person. Someone struggling with emotional disconnect. Someone dealing with family interference. Someone finding it difficult to stay loyal because they no longer feel connected to their partner. Different stories. Different people.
Yet the same pain. And after reading all these stories, one thought keeps coming back to my mind:
Something isn’t right with marriages these days.
We Are Choosing Partners for Everything Except Compatibility When people choose a life partner, they consider many practical things. Income. Family background. Education. Personality. Career growth. House. Car. Social status. There is nothing wrong with these factors. They matter.
But many stories suggest that people often overlook the most important things: Compatibility. Emotional connection. Shared values. The willingness to grow together. Many people compromise because they find someone attractive. Some compromise because of family pressure. Some compromise because they feel they are running out of time. And years later, they find themselves asking a painful question:
“Why am I feeling lonely inside my own marriage?”
The Five Problems We See Again and Again
After reading thousands of stories on The Open Diary, the same themes keep appearing.
1. Lack of Communication
Many couples are not discussing problems. They are collecting them. Instead of solving misunderstandings when they are small, they allow resentment to grow. Over time, even simple conversations become arguments.
2. Emotional Disconnect
Many people are living together but not feeling connected. They share a home. They share responsibilities. But they no longer share their thoughts, fears, dreams, or emotions.
3. Infidelity
This is one of the most painful themes we see. Many stories don’t begin with cheating. They begin with loneliness. A lack of attention. A lack of appreciation. A lack of physical intimacy. Then someone outside the marriage starts providing what is missing inside it.
4. Family Interference
Parents want the best for their children. But sometimes constant involvement creates pressure on the marriage. Many stories on The Open Diary describe situations where small disagreements between husband and wife become much bigger because families get involved. A marriage becomes stronger when couples learn to solve problems together before inviting the whole world into them.
5. Unrealistic Expectations
Social media has changed the way people think about relationships. Every day we see perfect vacations. Perfect anniversaries. Perfect couples. Perfect lives. But marriage is not lived on Instagram. Marriage is lived in kitchens, hospitals, financial struggles, stressful days, family responsibilities, and ordinary moments. Many people today expect their partner to be everything at once. A best friend. A therapist. A soulmate. A financial provider. A travel partner. A perfect parent. A perfect lover. No human being can meet every expectation all the time.

Never solving conflicts between couples
Are Marriages Worse Than Before?
This is a difficult question. Personally, I think marriages have become more fragile. Not because people are bad. Not because men are bad. Not because women are bad. But because expectations have changed dramatically. Women today have greater independence, careers, ambitions, and financial freedom. Men are also dealing with changing expectations about their roles within relationships and families. Neither side is wrong.
But many couples are struggling to adapt to these changes together. At the same time, younger couples often seem less willing to compromise than previous generations. Many people want their partner to change. Very few are willing to change themselves. And that may be one of the biggest reasons relationships struggle.
Three Stories I Can Never Forget
One story was about a woman whose husband lived away from home. There was almost no physical intimacy between them. Over time, distance became loneliness. Loneliness became frustration. And frustration slowly damaged the relationship. Another common story involves finances. Rising expenses, different lifestyles, and expectations around money create constant stress between couples. The third story is one we see repeatedly on The Open Diary. Loss of attraction. People meet new colleagues. New friends. New personalities.
They compare their spouse with others and start focusing on what is missing instead of what they already have. That comparison quietly damages relationships.
The Biggest Lesson We Learned
The biggest lesson from thousands of stories is simple. Most people are waiting for their partner to change. Very few are asking themselves:
“What can I do differently?” People want understanding. But they don’t always try to understand. People want effort. But they don’t always make effort. People want appreciation. But they don’t always express appreciation. Marriage is not damaged by one big event. More often, it is damaged by hundreds of small moments that go unaddressed.

No communication between couples
There Is Good News
Despite all the challenges, there is one thing that gives us hope. Many people who write on The Open Diary eventually find solutions. Not because their marriage suddenly became perfect. But because they finally talked. They finally listened. They finally sought help. Some received guidance from therapists. Some learned from people who had successfully navigated similar situations. Some simply discovered they were not alone. And that changed everything. Because sometimes the biggest relief is knowing that someone else has survived what you are currently going through.
Marriage Doesn’t Need Perfection
If there is one thing we have learned from reading thousands of stories on The Open Diary, it is this: No marriage is perfect. No partner is perfect. No relationship is free from conflict. The goal is not perfection.
The goal is understanding. You cannot always change another person’s behaviour. But you can change how you communicate. How you respond. How you listen. How you support. And often, those small changes create the biggest transformations. Something may not be right with marriages these days. But that doesn’t mean marriages are broken.
It simply means that more people need support, honest conversations, and a safe place to seek help.
That is exactly why The Open Diary exists.
A place where people can anonymously share what they are going through, learn from others, connect with therapists, and find support without fear of judgment. Because sometimes the first step toward saving a relationship is simply talking about it.
