Apple's Chip Road Map Isn't About Speed Anymore

Apple's M-series chips used to be about one thing: beating Intel on benchmarks. The M1 shocked everyone. The M2 and M3 refined the formula. But the new road map — M6, M7, M8 — tells a different story. And it's not really about performance per watt.

Look at the M7 Ultra. It's designed to support up to 1.5 terabytes of memory. That's double what the M5 Ultra was supposed to handle. But here's the thing — Apple hasn't committed to shipping that configuration. The note says it depends on "the state of the industry." Which is a polite way of saying: we'll build it if someone actually needs it.

Who needs 1.5TB of unified memory? Not video editors. Not most developers. AI training workloads. Large language models eat memory for breakfast. Apple is signaling that the Mac is becoming an AI workstation, not just a creative professional's machine. (Though I wonder how many people will actually run local models that need that much RAM.)

The App Store rule that quietly decided the outcome here is the one that never gets talked about: Apple's strict sandboxing and memory management for iOS apps. Neural Engine tasks on iPhone are tightly controlled. You can't just grab a chunk of the NPU and run wild. That same philosophy — hardware as a managed resource, not an open playground — carries over to the Mac. Apple wants AI to work within their framework, not outside it.

The car project wasn't a total failure either. The report mentions it was the beginning of Apple's AI hardware strategy and the Neural Engine. Without the car, Apple would be even further behind in AI. So it wasn't all for nothing. That's a generous read. But it's probably true.

What About the Pencil and Tap-to-Pay?

New Apple Pencils are coming next spring. A new Pro version and an updated USB-C low-end model. They'll ship alongside the next iPad Pros. That's nice. But it's not the story here.

The more interesting retail move: Apple is rolling out iPhone 16s to store employees. These phones support tap-to-pay on heavier credit cards. Which means Apple can start dropping those payment terminal attachments. The iPhone becomes the register. Tap-to-pay becomes the default. It's a quiet infrastructure play, but one that changes the in-store experience.

Still Unclear

The road map sounds ambitious. But Apple has a habit of announcing future chips and then quietly adjusting specs. Will the M7 Ultra actually ship with 1.5TB? Depends on demand. Will developers build for it? Depends on whether Apple opens up the Neural Engine more. There's a gap between hardware capability and software permission.

What I still cannot measure is whether Apple's AI strategy is actually coherent across product lines. The chips are impressive. The retail changes are smart. But the App Store model — where Apple controls the stack — either accelerates AI adoption or chokes it. The hardware says "yes, here's the capacity." The platform rules say "yes, but on our terms." Which one wins? That's the question I don't have an answer for yet.
