Planet Fitness Is Free for Teens This Summer. Here’s How to Actually Use It.

A free 12-week window. The kids who use it well are going to look completely different by August.

Walk into any Planet Fitness this week and you’ll see the same thing happening in the lobby.

Packs of high schoolers checking in, taking pictures by the front desk, wandering toward the treadmills, drifting toward the smoothie counter, drifting back out. The High School Summer Pass is in full swing again, which means anyone 14 to 19 can train at any Planet Fitness in the country for free through the end of August.

It’s one of the better offers a teenager will ever get. A clean, air-conditioned gym, more than eleven full weeks of access, zero parental cost, and a body that genuinely responds to training better right now than it ever will again.

And almost everyone using the pass will waste it.

Why This Window Actually Matters

The teen years are unmatched for building muscle. Testosterone, growth hormone, and recovery capacity are at lifetime peaks. Research on adolescent resistance training consistently shows measurable strength and size gains in as little as 8 to 12 weeks, with progression curves adults usually can’t replicate. The same effort produces more visible change.

The problem is that “going to the gym” and “training” are different activities. The teens who plateau by July tend to follow the same loose pattern. They walk in, do whatever feels fun, throw in some bench press because a friend was doing it, leave after 35 minutes. No plan. No progression. No log of what got lifted last week.

Hanging out near weights for an hour doesn’t qualify as training. That’s the part nobody explains.

What a Real 12-Week Plan Looks Like

The structure that consistently produces results for beginners and intermediate lifters is some version of Push, Pull, Legs across six days, with built-in periodization. Periodization just means the program shifts over time so the body keeps adapting instead of stalling.

A solid 12-week block usually breaks into four phases:

  • Weeks 1 to 4 — Hypertrophy. Moderate load, 8 to 12 reps, focus on growing muscle and building work capacity.
  • Weeks 5 to 8 — Strength and Size. Heavier compounds, lower rep ranges, real progressive overload.
  • Weeks 9 to 11 — Peak. Higher intensity, drop sets, lagging muscle groups get priority work.
  • Week 12 — Deload. Volume down 40 percent, intensity down 20 percent. This is when the body actually finishes the job and grows.

Hitting each muscle group twice a week, logging every set, and trying to beat the previous week by one rep or one pound is the entire mechanism. Show up six days, push the numbers up slowly, eat enough, sleep, repeat. That’s the whole game.

Why Most Teens Quit by Week 3

It usually comes down to boredom and confusion. Walking into a commercial gym for the first time at 15 is intimidating, and “figure it out yourself” is genuinely bad advice. The kids who disappear aren’t lazy. They just never had a plan to follow, so every session felt like starting over.

A teen with a printed program walks past the lobby crowd, knocks out the first exercise, finishes the session in 50 minutes, and writes down their numbers. That kid will be unrecognizable in August. The one freestyling will look about the same as they did in May, maybe slightly more confused.

The kid with the plan also doesn’t have to think. The thinking already happened. They just execute.

The Half Nobody Talks About

Training is somewhere around 40 percent of what changes how a body looks. Food handles the rest.

A lot of high schoolers are dramatically under-eating protein, living on processed snacks, drinking calories without realizing it, and wondering why they look the same in week 8. Even a perfect program will stall without enough of the right food. I’m putting together a companion nutrition guide built specifically for teenage lifters (simple meals, realistic grocery lists, no weird supplements) for anyone running the program. More on that soon.

For now, the order of operations is clear: get the training right first, get the food right second, and the rest takes care of itself.

If You’re Going to Use the Pass, Use It

The free summer pass is real. The biology on teen muscle growth is real. Twelve weeks is exactly the right runway to make visible changes that hold into the school year.

The only piece most teens are missing is a plan that doesn’t require guessing every session.

I put the full thing together as the 12-Week Build Program: a 6-day Push/Pull/Legs split, periodized across the entire summer, with exact exercise prescriptions, set and rep targets, rest times, warm-up sequences, and printable logging sheets. It’s designed for commercial gym equipment, which means it runs cleanly inside any Planet Fitness using the machines and cables that are already there.

You can grab it here👉: 12-Week Build Program🔥

Start it Monday. Print the log. Write down every rep. Beat last week by one rep or one pound.

A lot of kids will let the free pass slip past them without much to show for it. Use the twelve weeks while they’re sitting there.
