What is a Marine Park in Malaysia? Before we even talk about warm sand, let’s understand where we are.

The Pulau Redang Marine Park is a protected area extending up to two nautical miles from the coast.

Why such strict regulations?

Because the primary objective is to protect and conserve marine ecosystems, particularly coral reefs and their associated wildlife, for future generations.

These waters were once part of the ‘No Fishing Waters,’ which explains why marine life is so abundant here today. The park is managed by the Department of Marine Parks under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. It is crucial to note that everything you see — corals, shells, fish, sand, and even the sea rocks — is protected by law.

The Pulau Redang Ecosystem

The Pulau Redang archipelago, located 45 km off the coast of Terengganu, comprises nine islands: Redang, Pinang, Ling, Ekor Tebu, Kerengga Besar and Kecil, Paku Besar and Kecil, and Lima.

This archipelago lies in the Indo-Pacific region, considered the world’s center of marine biodiversity, home to approximately 500 species of reef-building corals and over 3,000 species of fish. The coral reefs here are not merely beautiful; they are the result of a fascinating symbiosis between coral polyps and single-celled algae called zooxanthellae. Working in concert with the mangroves that line the estuaries of the main island, these reefs filter the water, protect against erosion, and serve as nurseries for countless species.

Once you arrive, the first essential stop is the Visitor Center on Pulau Pinang. This is where you’ll get all the information, maps, and advice you need to plan your stay. Park Rules: Be a Responsible Visitor. The preservation of Pulau Pinang depends on every visitor. The legislation is strict, governed by the Fisheries Act of 1985. Here are the golden rules to absolutely follow: Zero waste: Never throw anything into the water. Plastic bags are deadly to turtles, which mistake them for jellyfish. No touching: It is strictly forbidden to walk on or touch the coral. It is extremely fragile; some grow only one centimeter per year. Fishing prohibited: Any form of fishing, possession of fishing equipment (hooks, spearguns) is an offense punishable by law. Physical protection: Do not build anything, move any objects, or remove sand or shells. Motorized activities: Water skiing, speedboat racing, and jet skis are prohibited to protect the ecosystem. Failure to comply with these rules can result in fines of up to RM 20,000 or two years imprisonment. A conservation fee is also charged to each visitor to fund the park’s upkeep.

What to do in Redang? For nature lovers, the activities are endless. Snorkeling and diving are the best ways to explore the reefs. P. Lima and its underwater mountain are a must-see for experienced divers. For those who prefer to stay dry, enjoy the hiking trails to observe wildlife, migratory birds, or even Paleozoic plant fossils on the southwest coast. If you are camping, use only gas stoves.
