The Market We Never Planned to Visit

How a last-minute stop in Lisbon made me wish every city had one

In May 2026, my husband and I spent six wonderful days exploring Portugal, dividing our time between Lisbon and Sintra. We had a loose itinerary, leaving room for unexpected discoveries, and one of those turned out to be the highlight of our trip.

Time Out Market wasn’t part of our original plan. We decided to stop in on a whim.

Our son and daughter were elsewhere in Portugal with his friends, celebrating his bachelor party before his wedding later this year. His group had their own adventures, and we had ours. Our paths crossed at a few places in both Lisbon and Sintra.

We had visited the Time Out Market in Chicago a few years earlier and enjoyed it, so we were curious to see how the Lisbon location compared. It didn’t take long to realize there really was no comparison. The Lisbon market was on an entirely different level.

Housed inside the historic Mercado da Ribeira, the building blends old-world character with a lively, modern food hall. The history is still there in the architecture, but inside it feels vibrant and unmistakably Portuguese.

The first thing that caught my attention was the food.

Every stall seemed more tempting than the last. Fresh seafood rested on beds of ice. Golden pastries filled glass cases. The aroma of grilled meats drifted through the building. Everywhere I looked, there was something beautiful to photograph. I found myself slowing down just to admire the displays before deciding what to eat.

Even on a weekday afternoon, the market was buzzing. Locals shared communal tables with travelers from around the world. Conversations blended with the sounds of dishes clinking and orders being called. It felt less like a tourist attraction and more like a gathering place where everyone was welcome.

We already had dinner reservations that evening, so we promised ourselves we’d keep it light. That plan lasted until we started looking around. We settled on something simple, but every bite made us wish we’d canceled our reservation and spent the afternoon sampling food from one stall after another.

As we left, I turned to my husband and said, “Every city should have one of these.”

It was not a typical food court filled with chain restaurants, but a thoughtfully curated collection of local chefs and specialties under one roof. A place where visitors and residents alike can experience the flavors that define a city without having to choose just one restaurant.

The experience reminded me of Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia. Both markets occupy historic buildings that have found new life through food. The cuisines are different, but the feeling is remarkably similar. You’re getting a taste of the city’s culture, history, and personality.

Chicago’s Time Out Market has since closed, making our visit there feel like a memory from another chapter. Looking back after seeing Lisbon’s version, I understand why people speak so highly of it. The atmosphere, the quality of the food, and the sense of place all came together in a way that felt authentic rather than manufactured.

Sometimes the experiences that stay with us aren’t the ones we spend months planning. They’re the unexpected stops that remind us why we travel in the first place.
