Despite dismissive remarks like calling Pushpa 2: The Rule a “high-budget Bhojpuri” film, the record-breaking box office numbers of this Allu Arjun starrer prove that mass appeal transcends niche criticisms.

As Pushpa 2 continues to dominate the cultural conversation and 2024 draws to a close, it’s time to look back at some Hindi films that failed to meet expectations at the box office.

The Lady Killer

This Arjun Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar starrer undoubtedly tops the list of box office disappointments in 2024. Both actors have been struggling to stay relevant with audiences, and their performances in this film did little to change that. While Bhakshak and Singham Again garnered attention, their success can hardly be credited solely to Bhumi Pednekar and Arjun Kapoor.

Jigra

A collaboration between Dharma Productions, Vasan Bala, and Alia Bhatt, featuring an emotional tale of a sister’s undying love for her brother, sounded like a surefire hit. However, reality fell far short of expectations. While I haven’t watched the film myself, the teaser was underwhelming. Alia Bhatt had the chance to prove herself as a true superstar but unfortunately missed the mark.

The criticisms extended to her performance style, with many trolling her for the perceived similarity in her dialogue delivery across Gangubai Kathiawadi and Jigra. Defenders argued, “How can her voice change?” But voice modulation is a skill that even actors like Shreyas Talpade demonstrate in contrasting roles like Golmaal and Pushpa. Alia, it seems, has a lot to learn in this regard.

Savi

Speaking of disappointments, Savi is a film that goes hand-in-hand with Jigra. Divya Khosla Kumar not only called out the makers of Jigra for allegedly inflating box office numbers but also accused them of plagiarism, all while ignoring the fact that Savi itself went largely unnoticed. Ironically, her bold claims became a source of unintentional humor. Perhaps Divya should explore the comedy genre — it might suit her better!

Ishq Vishk Rebound

Nobody asked for a sequel to Ishq Vishk, yet the makers decided to capitalize on the nostalgia of the original. Predictably, this backfired, as the box office numbers provided a harsh reality check. The real victims here are the debutants, who now bear the unfortunate tag of having started their careers with a flop. If they ever gain prominence, this will likely become a sob story in their interviews.

Bhaiyya Ji

Manoj Bajpayee’s collaboration with the makers of Ek Bandaa Hi Kaafi Hai raised expectations for Bhaiyya Ji. Playing a massy character, Bajpayee seemed poised for theatrical success. However, the film failed to draw audiences to theaters, despite his impressive OTT track record. Honestly, the trailer alone was enough to suggest that Manoj Bajpayee’s talents don’t align with such roles.

While some flops may fade into obscurity, they also offer valuable lessons for filmmakers and actors alike — resonating with the audience is key, and no formula guarantees success. With 2025 on the horizon, let’s hope Bollywood delivers stories that strike the perfect balance between creativity and commercial appeal.
