The Unexpected Mirror: When My “Hustle” Became Someone Else’s Dream

This morning, after dropping our kids off at school, another mom invited me for coffee. We drove to the Starbucks near our house and we talked about the usual things: school schedules, activities, and the chaos of raising children.
And then she said something that caught me completely off guard.
“I’m actually quite jealous of you,” she admitted.
I nearly chocked on my coffee.
This is a wealthy town. Since moving here last July, I’ve been surrounded by moms who seem to have stepped out of a luxury catalog. They drive high-end SUVs, wear designer jewelry, and their husbands bring home salaries that allow them the ultimate luxury: time. They spend their mornings at the gym, tending to beautiful gardens, or volunteering for the PTO without a single worry about the next paycheck.
To be honest? I was the one who was jealous of them.
The Necessity vs. The Narrative
In my mind, my life wasn’t a choice; it was a mandate. I work because I have to. If I don’t work, things get tight.
So, I’ve told myself, Well, I just have a life that requires work. I viewed my work as a symptom of “work-luck”, while I watched outher moms enjoy a peaceful, curated life.
But fellow mom saw something entirely different.
She told me she wasn’t envious of the expensive cars or the leisure time. She was envious of my drive. She saw a woman who possessed a sense of pride, confidence, and identity outside of being “just a mom.”
Most shockingly, she pointed to my son. She told me she always assumed that high-career energy ment the children would suffer, but she saw my son as kind and bright, as much as their own kids whose mother is home 24/7. She thought I’m managing both career and motherhood well. That part unsettled me the most.
The Tug-of-War: “Mad, Bad, or Sad”
Her comments reminded me of the book I read when I was out for maternity leave. “엄마되기 아프거나 미치거나 (Motherhood: To suffer or To go Mad)” Even in a more developed and modernized society like the U.S., mothers are still walking a razor-thin tightrope.
Highly educated women spend decades building expertise, only to reach a fork in the road: Career or Caregiving? When a husband earns enough to cover everything, the “choice” to step back from a career becomes deceptively easy -yet it often leaves a void of identity that no amount of gardening or PTO meetings can fill.
I realized that while I felt “forced” into the job market, my friend felt “trapped” by the comfort of her husband’s shadow. My struggle for financial stability gave ma an accidental gift: an unbreakable sense of self.
It is incredibly humbling and a bit absurd to realize that the life I sometimes reset for being “too busy” is the same life someone else looks at with longing.
We are all struggling with the same math equation, just with different variables. Whether we are working because we have to or staying home because we can, we are all wondering if we’re doing enough for our children while trying not to lose ourselves in the process.
The Parting Shot
As we finished our coffee, exchange hugs and said our goodbyes, the irony of our conversation played out in real-time. She walked toward her sleek BMW SUV, likely heading to a morning of errands or a quiet house. I, on the other hand, was already checking my watch, already shifting my brain into “work mode,” rushing back to my desk to meet the next deadline.
In that moment, I didn’t feel the usual sting of envy. Instead, I felt a strange sense of gratitude.
We often view our own struggle as a “must,” while others see them as a “strength.” I walked away realizign that my career was actually the thing that made me feel whole and visible to the world.
We are all just looking across the fence, admiring each other’s gardens, forgetting that we are both working hard to keep our own flowers blooming.
