A Nap After
Memorial Day, 3:05 PM
Just woke up from a nap. Like a legit, wonderfully dozy borderline fever-y-even-though-I-don’t-have-a-fever nap. The 4.5 year old was asleep on top of me. Still damp of from running away from the hose in yard, before stealing the hose and blasting holes into the same yard.
The little kid in me who would’ve been spanked for blasting holes in the yard needed so much soothing and and extra slow big breaths. He wanted to use my big voice to yell, but I didn’t think we needed to repeat the patterns that made us feel bad for being a kid in the first place.
Maybe that is why all of us needed a nap after.
The bees are moving in and we couldn’t be happier. I’m not only happy, I’m relieved. We’ve dumped invested what used to a whole paycheck (back when I use to get those) into the bees over the past 4 weeks. All the planters, the wildflowers, the indoor seed starters, the raised garden beds, the 38 cubic feet of Four (fucking) Seasons bougie dirt with 8 organic certifications and integrated kelp from the south of France and powdered snail shells from wherever ambrosia comes from…

Beehaven
Whatever. The bees love it, and we love it too. All the vegetable sprouts are beautiful. The strawberries are berrying. The flowers make me smile. The herb garden will make the future witches in our future coven jealous. And my back is stronger than ever.
Maybe that is why I needed a nap.
Oh, and also, the 4.5 year old took us on a 4 mile bike ride around the lake. He flies so fast, it turns heads. Old people comment about us not being able to catch up. Youths who are too cool to comment on anything look up from their phones and raise their eyebrows at him and almost smile at us. The 11.5 year old is still complaining about having to touch his bike at all, because “we go too fast” and “the sun is too bright.” He bailed and went home after .25 miles of biking and a lifetime of complaining.
Maybe that is why I needed a nap.
I miss my father-in-law. I visited his grave during my nap today.
