Why I Wrote an Essay About Democracy, Globalization, and Artificial Intelligence

Over the past several months, I found myself asking a question that gradually changed the way I think about artificial intelligence.

Can AI break history’s pattern?

At first, I thought I was writing an essay about AI. Instead, I ended up writing about civilization.

Looking back over the past three decades, I realized I had lived through three extraordinary transformations. As a Chinese student in 1989, I witnessed the democracy movement and later stood before the newly opened Berlin Wall. Years later, after completing my studies at Stanford, I began my career in Silicon Valley during the rise of the Internet and globalization. Over the past two decades, I have worked in machine learning and artificial intelligence as a researcher, educator, and former IBM Chief Data Scientist.

For a long time, I regarded these as separate chapters of modern history: democratization, globalization, and artificial intelligence.

Only recently did I begin to see them differently.

Each revolution expanded human capability in remarkable ways. Democratization expanded political freedom. Globalization expanded economic opportunity. Artificial intelligence is expanding humanity’s cognitive capability. Yet each also revealed the same underlying challenge: our ability to create new capabilities often advances much faster than our ability to build the institutions, trust, and shared values needed to guide them wisely.

That realization led me to a different question.

Artificial intelligence is not simply another powerful technology. It is a machine learner. It learns from humanity’s accumulated knowledge, language, decisions, and behavior. For the first time in history, the past is no longer simply remembered — it is being learned by machines.

If that is true, then the future of AI will depend on far more than better models, larger data centers, or faster chips. It will also depend on the civilization from which AI learns.

That idea became the foundation of a new essay I recently completed, “Can AI Break History’s Pattern? What Democratization and Globalization Can Teach Us About the Age of AI.” Rather than focusing primarily on technology, the essay explores a broader historical question: whether humanity can recognize a recurring pattern across democratization, globalization, and artificial intelligence — and whether we still have time to break it.

No one has definitive answers to the questions AI is forcing us to confront. The technology is advancing too quickly, and the stakes are too high for anyone to claim certainty. But history offers something equally valuable: perspective.

The unfinished work of democratization and globalization reminds us that every great expansion of human capability brings consequences that are often recognized only after the fact. AI is different because it learns from that history — and because it amplifies what it learns at unprecedented speed and scale. If we simply assume that technological progress will naturally produce human progress, we risk repeating familiar patterns with consequences far greater than those of previous revolutions.

That is why the conversation cannot remain focused on technology alone. It must also ask what kind of civilization we are building for AI to learn from — and what we must do today to ensure that intelligence ultimately strengthens freedom, human flourishing, and our shared future, rather than amplifying the unfinished challenges of our past.

Perhaps the most important question of the AI age is not how intelligent our machines will become.

It is whether our civilization can become wise enough to guide them.
