On Kinzie, the danger often does not come from the whole bike lane. It comes from the break in it. A gap for a driveway. A gap near an alley. A gap where vehicles turn across the bike path. A gap near a loading area where trucks, vans, rideshare drivers, and service vehicles move in and out during the busiest parts of the day.

That shift can happen in a few feet. The rider may have been traveling inside a separated lane, following the markings, staying where the street design told them to stay. Then a driver cuts through an opening, noses across the lane, or blocks the protected space. The crash looks sudden, but the conflict often builds into the street design long before impact.

Why Barrier Gaps Matter in Protected Bike Lanes

A cyclist riding in a regular painted bike lane may expect vehicles to drift nearby. They may ride with constant suspicion because only paint separates them from traffic. In a protected lane, the feeling changes. The rider has a defined corridor. Drivers have a visual and physical warning to stay out. That separation can reduce daily stress and help people ride with more confidence.

The problem starts where that separation breaks.

Protected lanes need openings. Buildings need driveways. Alleys need access. Intersections need turning space. Businesses need loading access. Vehicles need to reach curb cuts. Those openings create points where the bike lane and vehicle path cross again.

Drivers may not treat that gap as a bike crossing. They may treat it as a driveway throat, a turn lane, a place to creep forward, or a quick opening through traffic.

A crash in a protected lane can sound easy to explain at first. The cyclist was in the lane. The driver crossed it. That should settle the matter.

It often does not.

Injuries From Gap Crashes

A driver crossing the protected lane can strike the rider’s front wheel or handlebars. The bike may twist under the cyclist. The rider may land on an outstretched hand.
