How to Optimize your Linkedin profile to get tech jobs

1. Profile picture

The first thing you should optimize on your Linkedin should be your profile picture. Your profile picture is the first thing people notice when they land on your page. As humans, we relate more to other humans more than any other thing, hence we observe a profile picture first before we even start scrolling futher.

Here is a checklist of a Linkedin profile picture

✅ Your picture, from the chest up

✅Plain colour background ( No distracting elements)

✅Clear and professional looking (No selfies)

✅Centralized (Not to the left or right)

✅ Look Welcoming and presentable ( No frowns)

2. Profile Banner

This is a tricky one. Ideally your Linkedin Profile should have a banner that states what you do in a clear manner. You can add in the things you have achieved, your number of clients, if any, or you could just simply add your skills.

You can choose to add your picture to the banner, or not. If you don’t know what to add on your banner, then you can simply leave it as a plain colour that matches your profile picture.

3. Profile section

In your profile section, we have your Name, Contact info, and headline.

A.- Name: This is where you add your full name (no nicknames). This is because people will search you up on LinkedIn once you start growing your network, and you don’t want to confuse them or make it hard for them to find you.

B — Contact info: This is usually found in your profile settings. Here, you can put in the best means of contacting you should potential clients or recruiters find your profile interesting and want to reach out.

Below is an Example

In this section, you can put in details like your Personal website, your Email, or your work numbe. Ensure it’s accurate as this section is very important. Imagine working hard applying for a job, and you lose it just because you didn’t add in accurate details!

C — Headline: Your headline is the text that appears below your profile picture and profile banner. Your headline plays a crucial role to optimization because it’s what people see when you comment under a post. If your headline is catchy and attention-grabbing, you will receive more profile views from LinkedIn

The headline should answer the Question: Who are you, and who are you helping?

Here is a great example.

Note: To optimize for search, you should add just one skill you are optimizing for. just one. Adding a hundred skills in your headline will confuse the LinkedIn algorithm if a potential recruiter is looking for you.

Here is how not to do it.

4. About section:

Your About section can be about anything, but most Linkedin experts suggest that the About section should be where you highlight a story about your journey. If you are still in the early stages of your career, you can highlight what led you to learning your skill, and how your journey has been so far. Highlight your struggles, your wins, and what you ae excited about in the future.

If you have a lot of experience, you can highlight: what you’ve done, career achievements, notable companies you have worked with, awards you have received, etc. This builds social proof and makes people trust you more.

5. Experience Section:

Your LinkedIn Experience Section is where you add in the places you have worked in the past, either voluntary or paid. For example, if you interned at a company for 6 months, then you should add it in your experience section, as long as that experience is relevant to your New skill.

Just add in the company, your time spent, and the things you did for them. What recruiters are looking for is not just your experience; what did you achieve at the company? How did you help them grow? What were your duties and how did you execute them? Add those in.

As a bonus to our dear readers, we added a bonus tip!

6. Featured section

There is another feature on Linkedin that people often overlook, and that is LinkedIn’s featured Section. It’s the tab that’s usually found under your profile before showing your posts.

You can use the featured section for a lot of things like adding in your top performing posts, inserting your resume/cover letter, an article where a news company featured you, etc.

Linkedin experts suggest that you use it to showcase your best quality work. If you made a post where you got a client results, add it in. If you just updated your portfolio, add it in. If you have a free offer for clients, add it in too. Make the most out of the featured section.

Conclusion

And with that, you are now set to start using LinkedIn to network, secure partnerships, and get hired!

LinkedIn is a long-term game. Even if you post without getting any results, stay consistent and keep optimizing and improving. Show your work online, build in public. Don’t wait for clients to come to you; connect with top executives and offer to help, and before you know it, you will find yourself landing your dream tech role
