Painting the Ultimate Bruce Lee vs. Chuck Norris Diorama

Bringing the legendary Way of the Dragon showdown to life through 3D printing and painting

Few martial arts movie scenes are as iconic as the final fight between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris in Way of the Dragon. When I came across this diorama, I knew I wanted to capture the look and feel of that classic battle while adding realistic skin tones, weathering, and subtle details that would help the piece stand out on display.

This project started as a raw 3D print and slowly evolved into a finished display piece through layers of painting, washes, highlights, and weathering effects.

Building Realistic Skin Tones

The first step was establishing the flesh tones for both Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris. I prefer starting with full coverage skin tones without adding reds or pinks underneath. This gives me a clean foundation to build from.

To add definition, I used a beige pink color in the recesses of the face and body. This creates subtle shadows and helps separate the different muscle groups without making the effect look exaggerated.

Once the shadows were established, I moved on to highlights. My approach to highlighting is fairly conservative. I prefer subtle transitions over dramatic contrasts because I want the finished piece to look natural rather than stylized.

Capturing Bruce Lee’s Signature Look

One of the challenges with Bruce Lee was recreating his distinctive bronze skin tone.

After the initial highlights were complete, I applied a warm flesh wash mixed with a small amount of red to bring additional warmth into the skin. While the effect looked good, Bruce Lee still appeared too light.

To correct this, I went back with Army Painter Warm Skin Shade and darkened the overall complexion. This pushed the skin toward the brownish bronze appearance that Bruce Lee is known for.

Because the additional wash softened the highlights, I reapplied them using the same recipe to restore definition while keeping everything subtle and realistic.

Sometimes the best results come from taking a step backward and repainting an area rather than settling for something that doesn’t look right.

Adding Character Through Small Details

The realism of a portrait often comes down to the smaller details.

For Bruce Lee’s facial features, I added warmth to the cheeks, nose, ears, and neck using a heavily diluted red oil wash. The effect is subtle but helps prevent the skin from looking flat.

I also added a light five o’clock shadow around the mustache area to give the portrait a more natural appearance.

During the final stages, I mixed several colors together to create bruising and facial damage inspired by the actual fight scene from Way of the Dragon. Both Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris show visible signs of battle in the film, so incorporating those marks helped connect the statue to the source material.

Weathering the Base

The base was almost a project of its own.

I started with Raw Sienna and Raw Umber oil paints, applying them heavily before removing excess paint with a sponge. This created natural variation and prevented the stonework from looking too clean or uniform.

Additional shading was added using Agrax Earthshade to enhance depth and texture throughout the base.

One thing some people may notice is that I left a number of support marks on the interior sections of the base. Since these areas are hidden from view and the piece is intended for my personal collection, I chose to leave them rather than spend time cleaning areas that would never be seen.

Creating Contrast with Metallic Effects

The dragon details were painted using a copper metallic finish followed by Dirty Down Verdigris.

Applying the verdigris heavily created a dark green aged metal effect. By diluting the product, I was also able to achieve lighter blue-green tones in other areas.

Afterward, I dry brushed copper back over the raised surfaces to restore contrast and make the sculpted dragon details stand out.

The lettering received a different treatment. Rather than leaving everything clean and polished, I wanted a weathered patina effect that suggested age while still allowing the text to remain readable.

Finishing Touches

The final stages focused on color adjustments and visual storytelling.

Additional reds were applied to brighten specific details in the base. The background lettering received a yellow-to-orange fade effect to create more visual interest and help draw attention to the centerpiece.

The last major effect was sweat.

Since both Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris are visibly sweating during the climactic fight sequence, I wanted to recreate that look on the statue. The effect added a surprising amount of realism and helped bring the portraits to life.

While I lost some footage during the process, the final result was one of my favorite parts of the entire project.

Final Thoughts

This Bruce Lee vs. Chuck Norris diorama was one of the most enjoyable projects I’ve worked on. Between the skin tones, weathering, metallic effects, battle damage, and sweat effects, there were plenty of opportunities to experiment and push the realism further.

The goal was never to create a perfectly clean display piece. Instead, I wanted something that captured the energy and intensity of one of the greatest martial arts movie fights ever filmed.
