There is a particular kind of modern person – I will nominate myself here because it is safer and also because I have the relevant receipts – who can speak with disconcerting fluency about anterior cingulate cortex thickness while being constitutionally incapable of sitting still for twelve unadorned minutes on a cushion he researched for three weeks before purchasing. This person believes, in a way that is half spiritual and half peer-reviewed, that attention sculpts the brain. He uses the phrase “experience-dependent plasticity” in casual conversation. He does not, however, reliably meditate.

For roughly a decade I occupied this interestingly upholstered contradiction: a Zen enthusiast who did not practice Zen in any form that would have been recognizable to, say, a thirteenth-century Japanese monk or a contemporary neuroscientist with a stopwatch. I believed in zazen – the stripped-down sitting practice associated most famously with Dōgen – with the fervor of someone who has read the abstracts but not run the experiment. I was convinced that long-term sitting could alter resting-state brain networks, reduce self-referential rumination, and generally turn down the volume on the psychic talk radio station known as Me FM. I simply did not sit.

Instead, I cultivated what might be called a theoretical intimacy with practice. I read about the legendary wall-gazing of Bodhidharma. I learned that in Zen monasteries work itself – samu, manual labor – was considered an expression of realization, a principle codified by the Chan master Baizhang Huaihai in his famous dictum, “A day without work is a day without food.” I acquired a working knowledge of the difference between focused-attention and open-monitoring meditation as described in contemporary cognitive neuroscience. I did everything except the one thing that might have embarrassed me into contact with my own mind.

It would be tidy to say that what broke this pattern was a crisis. In fact it was a hole. An actual hole, dug in the backyard for reasons that now seem less important than the fact that the digging required repetition, mild exertion, and the sort of boredom that contemporary life has largely engineered away. There was no podcast playing. No phone within reach. Just shovel, dirt, and the low-grade resistance of soil that did not care about my conceptual frameworks.

At some point – perhaps from heat, perhaps from the novelty of unmediated silence – I noticed what was happening while it was happening. The granular vibration of the handle against my palms. The brief arrest of breath as the shovel hit a rock. The flare of irritation, followed by the tiny negotiation of effort and angle. There was digging, and there was the awareness of digging.

It felt, disconcertingly, like meditation.

And this is where the modern neuroscience complicates the tidy romance of the anecdote. Because from the brain’s perspective, digging attentively and sitting in zazen are not the same exercise, even if both are called “mindfulness” in a wellness brochure. Task-based attention – digging while noticing digging – engages sensorimotor circuits, executive control networks, and the dorsal attention system responsible for goal-directed focus. There is feedback. The shovel hits stone. The body adjusts. Attention is supported by the demands of the task.

By contrast, classical zazen, especially in its “just sitting” form, removes the scaffolding. No external goal. No measurable progress. No sensory novelty beyond the creak of knees and the sound of one’s own breathing. In this vacuum, what becomes salient is the activity of what neuroscientists call the default mode network – the constellation of regions associated with self-referential thinking, autobiographical narrative, and the construction of the ongoing story of “me.” In stillness, the mind’s habit of producing a protagonist is harder to ignore.

Imaging studies of experienced meditators – those inconvenient individuals who have in fact sat for tens of thousands of hours – suggest decreased baseline activity in this network and increased connectivity between attentional and interoceptive regions. In less technical terms: less automatic entanglement in the story, more stable awareness of sensation. The claim that “zazen reshapes your neurons,” which once sounded like the overcaffeinated slogan of a Silicon Valley monastery, now has at least partial empirical backing.

The uncomfortable implication is that while digging a hole mindfully is admirable – and possibly a vast improvement over digging it while rehearsing an argument from 2009 – it may not destabilize the sense of self in quite the same way as sitting with nothing to do and nowhere to hide. The task itself provides structure. One can, with sufficient skill, be attentive and still leave the underlying narrative machinery intact.

Sitting, by contrast, is neurologically inhospitable. There is no productive alibi. The mind, deprived of novelty, begins to display its own restlessness in high resolution. Boredom blooms. Plans proliferate. Memories intrude. And in the act of noticing these phenomena without immediately obeying them, something subtle shifts. The identification with the narrative weakens – not through argument but through repetition.

If digging attentively is functional strength training, zazen may be isometric work at the level of identity. It asks the brain to experience itself without props.

This does not make working meditation a fraud. Zen tradition itself insists that cooking, cleaning, and yes, digging can be complete practice when performed with total attention. But from a plasticity standpoint, the most radical rewiring may occur not when attention is embedded in meaningful action, but when it is sustained in the absence of meaning altogether.

Which is to say: after ten years of admiring meditation from a safe conceptual distance, I began to suspect that my preference for “mindfulness in action” was not entirely principled. It was ergonomic. Digging felt wholesome. Sitting felt like exposure.

And perhaps that is the latest twist – the one that marries thirteenth-century monastic stubbornness with twenty-first-century brain scans. The practices that most reliably alter the baseline functioning of the mind are precisely those that deny it distraction. They remove the shovel. They remove the hole. They remove the narrative of improvement. What remains is the unadorned activity of consciousness, constructing and reconstructing a self dozens of times per minute.

To sit and watch that process without intervening may be, in strictly neural terms, the most subversive act available to a species addicted to productivity.

Which is a long way of saying that I still dig holes. But I have begun, finally, to sit.
