Improve your Productivity — working on the right Prompts to trigger actions — here is How

Why do we sometimes hold on blinking our eyes, unable to start, even when we know exactly what to do?

Productivity is not just willpower or skills — it is the choreography of Dr. BJ Fogg’s Behaviour Model’s components. This model gives us a compact map: Behaviour = Motivation × Ability × Prompt.

In this blog I will explain to you on identifying the right Prompt and Prompt Driven Actions and show you how sharpening prompts (cues) turns stalled intention into consistent results.

First, let me give a brief introduction on the Fogg’s Behaviour Model.

Introduction to Fogg’s Behaviour Model

Dr. BJ Fogg, a Stanford researcher, proposed a simple but powerful idea: a target Behaviour happens when Motivation, Ability, and a Prompt converge at the same moment. If any of these three are missing, the behaviour usually does not occur. Think of it as a three-legged stool — remove one leg and the stool falls. The formula, is:

B (Behaviour) = MAP

  • Motivation (M) = desire or reason to act (how much you want it).
  • Ability (A) = how easy the action is to do (skills, time, resources).
  • Prompt (P) = the cue that triggers the action (notification, context, person, object).

As I experienced the parameter Prompt’s greater role in behaviour pattern on productivity, I will explore further on the parameter Prompt (P) for you.

The parameter Prompt (P) to explore further

When motivation and ability align, a tiny prompt can turn intention into habit — like a match lighting dry kindling.

A prompt is the singular, external cue that initiates a behaviour. It’s the signal to “do it now!” The model asserts that without a prompt, even with high motivation and ability, the behaviour will not occur. Examples of prompts can be:

  • An alarm clock ringing ⏰
  • A notification on your phone 📱
  • Seeing a full recycling bin, which prompts you to take it out ♻️

Fogg’s model goes further by categorizing prompts into three types, depending on the individual’s level of motivation and ability.

The Three Types of Prompts

  1. Spark: Spark is effective when your motivation is low but ability is high. The prompt itself contains a motivational element.
  • Example: You are a great writer but feeling lazy. A “Spark” prompt could be a notification that says, “If you finish 500 words now, I will treat you a coffee.” It adds a layer of motivation to the trigger.

2. Facilitator: Facilitator can be effective when your motivation is high but ability is low. The prompt makes the behaviour easier to do, like a pop-up that guides you through the steps of a complex task.

  • Example: You want to code a complex script but don’t know where to start. A “Facilitator” prompt is a template or a “Starter Prompt” in an AI tool that gives you a 50% head start, making the task feel “easy.”

3. Signal: Signal is useful when both of your motivation and ability are high. A simple reminder is all that’s needed, such as a green traffic light telling you to drive.

  • Example: A simple calendar alert that pops up when you are already in your “flow” zone. It doesn’t need to motivate or simplify; it just needs to say, “Go.”

Takeaway

In my observation, we often over-rely on Motivation, which is a “fickle friend” — it waxes and wanes like the moon. We over-rely on Ability, which takes a long time to build.

The Prompt is the bridge between the internal world of “motivation and want” and the external world of “doing.” Without it, we are all just ghosts haunting our own potential.

If you are “stagnating” despite having the skills and the motivation, you don’t need more “willpower.” You need a better trigger.
