Who is BNXN?

Daniel Etiese Benson is known as BNXN in the Naija afrobeat industry. Born in Lagos on May 14, 1997. He started making music while studying at Babcock University (my alma mater). He gained attention in 2019 with his hit “Spiritual” (featuring Zlatan). He signed a partnership deal with Burna Boy’s Spaceship Records, which helped launch his mainstream career.

When he started his career, he used the moniker BUJU; however, He changed to BNXN so as not to be confused with Buju Banton, a successful Jamaican dancehall musician.

BNXN is known for his soulful vocals and relatable lyrics about love, hustle, and growth. His falsetto voice is smooth and rhythmic.

Bnxn has had previous projects — EPs and an album before his latest work, Captain.

• In 2021, he released an EP called - Sorry I’m Late EP with famous tracks like “Never Stopped”, “Kilometer”
• In 2022, he released another EP — Bad Since ’97 with hit tracks like: “Bad Since ’97”, “Many Ways” (feat. Wizkid)
• In 2023, he released his debut album Sincerely, Benson with hit songs like “Gwagwalada” (feat. Kizz Daniel & Seyi Vibez)
• In 2025, his latest work is Captain has good songs like: “I Alone”, “Set Up” (feat. Seyi Vibez), “Fi Kan We Kan” (feat. Rema)

My review — CAPTAIN

1. Sound, Tone & Feel Many critics point out that the album feels sonically unified — there are no jarring tonal shifts, and the transitions are smooth. For me, the smooth transition is good and makes it easy to follow through. The instrumentation and production largely serve BNXN’s vocal style rather than overshadowing it.
2. Stand out track from the album

• “Cough Syrup” (feat. Victony) is often noted as one of the album’s emotional cores and high points
• “Fi Kan We Kan” (feat. Rema) gets praise for bringing energy and contrast, breaking some of the album’s more subdued pacing.
• “Very Soon” (feat. FOLA) is appreciated for its duet dynamic and emotional interplay.
• “Totori” also stands out for its nostalgic interpolation and melodic appeal.
• “In Jesus Name” (feat. Soweto Gospel Choir), though not a gospel track, has a prayerful feel. Although the lyrics are very repetitive.

A very Good Album

Captain is a strong and mature offering — BNXN shows he knows his strengths, can hold a mood, and can maintain consistency over 16 tracks. Many of its high points (especially Cough Syrup, Fi Kan We Kan, Very Soon) are proof that he still has the power to connect emotionally.
