$847 lost in one week. That was the breaking point.

I remember staring at my Shopify dashboard at 1 AM, refreshing the disputes page like a madman. Every notification made my stomach drop. Another $120 gone. Another $95. Another $200. BIN lookup reduced my chargebacks by 73% in 90 days, and I’m going to show you exactly how I did it. For free.

I couldn’t sleep. My profit margins were evaporating. I was working 60-hour weeks just to watch fraudsters steal my inventory and my money.

The worst part? Shopify’s fraud analysis wasn’t catching these orders. They looked “low risk” in the system, so I’d ship them. Two weeks later… dispute. Every single time.

I needed a solution, and I needed it fast.

The Nightmare: Bleeding Money Every Week

Let me be brutally honest about how bad it got.

July was my worst month. 11 chargebacks in 31 days. Average loss per chargeback: $127. Total damage: $1,397 in one month.

My chargeback rate hit 8.2%. For context, anything above 1% puts you at risk of losing your payment processor. I was staring down the barrel of Shopify Payments shutting me down entirely.

I tried everything Shopify recommended first. Enabled their fraud analysis. It flagged maybe 2 out of 10 fraudulent orders. Started manually reviewing suspicious orders, but what was I even looking for? Mismatched addresses? Different billing and shipping locations? Half my legitimate customers had those.

I spent hours reading fraud prevention guides. Tightened my AVS settings. Added extra verification steps. Nothing worked.

Then I sat down and did something I should’ve done months earlier. I reviewed every single chargeback from the past 60 days.

Twenty chargebacks. Spreadsheet. Card type, order value, customer info, everything.

After two hours of analysis, I noticed something that made my blood run cold. 16 out of 20 chargebacks (80%) involved prepaid cards.

Prepaid gift cards. Prepaid debit cards. Those Green Dot cards you buy at Walmart. Every. Single. One.

The Discovery That Changed Everything

I went down a rabbit hole researching “prepaid card fraud prevention.”

That’s when I found BIN lookup.

BIN stands for Bank Identification Number. It’s the first six digits of any credit or debit card. Every card on the planet has one. Those six digits tell you everything. Is it credit or debit? Which bank issued it? What country? And most importantly… is it prepaid?

The realization hit me like a truck. I could identify prepaid cards in 30 seconds. Before processing the order. Before shipping anything.

Why are prepaid cards so risky? The data I found was alarming.

Prepaid cards have a 5x higher chargeback rate than regular credit cards. Here’s why fraudsters love them.

No credit check required. Anyone can buy one with cash at a gas station. No ID needed. No paper trail. If the card gets declined or flagged? Toss it and buy another one for $5.95.

Gift cards are even worse. Stolen credit card → buy gift card online → use gift card to buy your products → file chargeback on original stolen card. Now you’re stuck with the loss while the gift card issuer (Visa, Mastercard) says “not our problem.”

I felt stupid for not knowing this earlier. But I also felt hopeful for the first time in months.

How I Implemented BIN Lookup (Step-by-Step)

Here’s exactly what I did. You can copy this process tonight.

Step 1: Identify High-Risk Orders

I created a simple checklist. An order gets flagged if it has ANY of these:

Order value over $200

New customer (first purchase)

Different billing and shipping address

Shipping to freight forwarder or PO box

These orders get a manual BIN check before fulfillment.

Step 2: Get the BIN (First 6 Digits)

From your Shopify admin, go to Orders. Click the suspicious order. Scroll to Payment section. You’ll see the card number (partially masked): “5510 29XX XXXX 1234”

The BIN is those first 6 digits: 551029

Shopify shows you this for every order. It’s already there.

Step 3: Use a Free BIN Lookup Tool

I tested three tools. BinList.net, FraudLabsPro’s free checker, and BinSearchLookup.

BinSearchLookup was the fastest and most accurate. Takes 2 seconds.

Go to the site. Type in the BIN. Hit search. Done.

Step 4: Check the Results

Here’s a real example from a flagged order.

BIN: 486903

Results:

Type: PREPAID (This is your red flag)

Issuer: Vanilla Visa Gift Card (Major red flag)

Country: United States

Issuing Bank: MetaBank

The moment I see “PREPAID” + “Gift Card,” my fraud alarm goes off.

Step 5: Make Your Decision

I developed a simple policy after testing for two weeks.

CANCEL if: Prepaid gift card + high value ($200+) + new customer

APPROVE if: Prepaid from legitimate source (Chime, Cash App) + medium value + return customer

APPROVE if: Regular credit or debit card

For canceled orders, I send a polite email: “We couldn’t verify your payment method. Please contact us to complete your order with an alternative payment.”

90% never respond. The 10% who do are usually legitimate and happy to use a different card.

Total time per order: 30 seconds.

The Results: $4,200 Saved in 90 Days

I started using BIN lookup religiously on September 1st. Here’s what happened.

Before BIN Lookup (July to August):

Chargebacks per month: 11

Average loss per chargeback: $127

Total monthly loss: $1,397

Chargeback rate: 8.2%

After BIN Lookup (September to November):

Chargebacks per month: 2

Average loss per chargeback: $95

Total monthly loss: $190

Chargeback rate: 1.3%

That’s an 73% reduction in chargebacks.

Monthly savings: $1,207

90 day savings: $3,621

Plus avoided Shopify Payments fees (they were threatening to increase my rates)

Plus avoided the stress of waking up to dispute notifications

Over those 90 days, I manually reviewed 47 high-risk orders. 12 canceled (would’ve been chargebacks, I’m certain). 35 approved and shipped (all legitimate customers). False positive rate: 0%

I didn’t reject a single legitimate customer. The key is not blocking ALL prepaid cards. Just the sketchy ones.

What I Learned (And My Mistakes)

Three things surprised me.

First, not all prepaid cards are fraud. About 70% of the prepaid cards I see are from Chime, Cash App, or other legitimate banking apps. Those are fine. It’s the gift cards that kill you.

Second, manual checking is totally sustainable for small stores. I’m processing about 30 to 40 orders a day. Checking 1 or 2 suspicious orders takes 60 seconds total. Worth every second.

Third, prevention is so much cheaper than fighting chargebacks. Between the lost product, the chargeback fee ($15 to $25), and the time spent on disputes… every prevented chargeback saves me $150+.

But I made mistakes.

Initially, I blocked ALL prepaid cards. Hurt my conversion rate. I rejected orders from legitimate customers using Chime, and they just bought from a competitor instead.

I didn’t check medium value orders at first ($100 to $200 range). Missed two fraudulent orders in that range. Now I check anything over $150 if it’s a new customer.

I waited two weeks to implement this after discovering it. Those two weeks cost me $680 in chargebacks. I should’ve started immediately.

How You Can Do This Tonight

If you’re getting hammered with chargebacks, here’s what to do.

Step 1: Go to your Shopify disputes. Check your last 10 chargebacks. How many involved prepaid cards? (Look at the card type in the original order)

Step 2: If 50% or more were prepaid, you need BIN lookup immediately.

Step 3: Use the free tool I use: BinSearchLookup. Bookmark it.

Step 4: Start with high value orders only (over $200). Flag new customers with mismatched addresses.

Step 5: Track your results for 30 days. You’ll see the difference immediately.

Free vs Paid Options:

Free manual checking works great if you’re processing fewer than 100 orders per day. That’s what I do.

If you’re doing 500+ orders daily, consider paid API automation (FraudLabs Pro, Signifyd). They’ll check every order automatically. But for most small stores? Manual is fine.

Time Investment:

Week 1: 10 minutes to learn the process

Ongoing: 30 seconds per suspicious order

That’s it.

The Bottom Line

$847 lost in one week was my wake-up call.

BIN lookup was the answer I’d been searching for.

73% chargeback reduction. $4,200 saved in 90 days. 30 seconds per order. Free tool.

I’m still amazed this isn’t more widely known. Shopify doesn’t promote it. Most fraud prevention articles focus on expensive third party apps. But this simple trick (checking the BIN) has saved my business.

My chargeback rate is now 1.3%. I sleep through the night. I’m not afraid to check my email anymore.

If you’re dealing with chargebacks, especially from prepaid cards, BIN lookup is the simplest solution I’ve found. I wish I’d discovered it six months ago. I’d have saved another $8,000.
