The End of Cheap Globalization?

For decades, globalization was built on a simple promise: cheaper products.

Companies searched the world for the lowest costs. A product could be designed in one country, manufactured in another, assembled somewhere else, and sold globally. Consumers benefited from lower prices, while businesses enjoyed higher profits.

It seemed like the perfect system.

Then reality intervened.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed how fragile global supply chains had become. A factory shutdown thousands of miles away could leave store shelves empty. At the same time, rising tensions between major powers reminded governments that economic dependence can also become a strategic risk.

Suddenly, the cheapest option was no longer always the safest option.

Today, countries are investing heavily in domestic manufacturing, imposing tariffs, and trying to reduce their reliance on foreign suppliers for critical goods such as semiconductors, batteries, and pharmaceuticals.

The logic is simple: efficiency matters, but resilience matters too.

The consequence is a world that may become more expensive.

Producing goods closer to home often costs more. Maintaining backup suppliers costs more. Building economic security costs more.

For consumers, this could mean higher prices. For governments, it means accepting that some economic efficiency must be sacrificed for stability.

Does this mean globalization is ending?

Probably not.

Trade remains essential to the global economy, and no major country can completely isolate itself. What is ending is the era in which cost was the only priority.

The world is moving from globalization driven by efficiency to globalization shaped by security, resilience, and strategic interests.

Cheap globalization helped create the modern economy.

Its successor may create a more stable one but not necessarily a cheaper one.
