Mariah’s story is pop lore, but the details are richly human. She grew up in Huntington, New York, the offspring of an opera-schooled mom and an aerospace engineer dad, who wrote poetry, cut demos, and performed studio gigs prior to graduation.

A chance act of someone at Columbia handing over her tape to that label’s Tommy Mottola turned the hustle into history.

She was more than just a voice from the start, but a songwriter-producer forging her own path. “Vision of Love” laid out the template — melisma, message, musicianship — and was followed by one string of number ones that made critics swollow their “studio singer” skepticism after MTV Unplugged.

The world-wide recognition that followed with Music Box, the holiday classic Merry Christmas, and Daydream, in which “Fantasy” and theMariah-Whitney duet “One Sweet Day” commercialized the pop-met-hip-hop hybrid that she brought to prominence.

Independence and reinvention personified Butterfly and Rainbow.
