V. Introduction to Six Lines Divination

Part 5.1. Seasonal Prosperity and Decline

Part 5.1.2. Images of Prosperous, Supportive, Rest, Constraint, and Dead States

In the previous section, we introduced the five seasonal states of the Five Elements:

Prosperous, Supportive, Rest, Constraint, and Dead.

These states are not only used to judge strength and weakness. They can also produce different images.

The same Five Element may represent different things depending on whether it is Prosperous, Supportive, in Rest, in Constraint, or Dead.

Wood

When Wood is Prosperous, it appears as forests, bamboo groves, gardens, bamboo, and trees. Bamboo and trees are perennial plants, so they represent strong and enduring Wood.

When Wood is Supportive, it appears as reeds, rushes, grasses, and herbaceous plants. These are mostly annual plants, weaker and smaller than trees and bamboo.

When Wood is in Rest, it appears as rafters, pillars, wooden boats, and wooden carts. At this stage, Wood has already been cut and shaped into usable objects.

When Wood is in Constraint, it appears as firewood, loose pieces of wood, small wooden sticks, and twigs.

When Wood is Dead, it appears as coffins, outer coffins, decayed wood, dead wood, and tree stumps left after cutting.

Fire

When Fire is Prosperous, it appears as the fire used for firing pottery and smelting metal, or as bright flames rising upward.

When Fire is Supportive, it appears as lamplight and candlelight.

When Fire is in Rest, it appears as smoke from burning fire and cloud-like vapor near the ground.

When Fire is in Constraint, it appears as charcoal and ashes left after wood has burned out.

When Fire is Dead, it appears as ashes that have completely gone out and are no longer hot to the touch.

Earth

When Earth is Prosperous, it appears as a country, a fief, mountains, hills, and high peaks.

When Earth is Supportive, it appears as city walls, villages, communities, and large or small mounds of earth.

When Earth is in Rest, it appears as farmland and houses.

When Earth is in Constraint, it appears as high or low walls.

When Earth is Dead, it appears as manure and nutrient-containing soil.

Metal

When Metal is Prosperous, it appears as gold, jade, pearls, jewels, and precious vessels.

When Metal is Supportive, it appears as silver, brass, sharp knives, and swords.

When Metal is in Rest, it appears as lead, tin, plows, hoes, and other farming tools.

When Metal is in Constraint, it appears as objects blackened by fire and cooking pots.

When Metal is Dead, it appears as fine sand, broken stones, and crushed iron.

Water

When Water is Prosperous, it appears as the sea and great rivers.

When Water is Supportive, it appears as lakes, large marshes, ponds, and springs.

When Water is in Rest, it appears as field ditches and man-made canals.

When Water is in Constraint, it appears as wine and sour fermented drinks.

When Water is Dead, it appears as dried-up ponds and dried-up wells.

General Pattern

The different images of the Five Elements in the states of Prosperous, Supportive, Rest, Constraint, and Dead all follow the same general rule.

When an element is Prosperous, its qi is strong and expansive. Therefore, the images associated with it are large, powerful, and full of vitality.

When an element is Supportive, its qi is weaker than in the Prosperous state. Therefore, the images associated with it become smaller or less forceful.

When an element is in Rest, its qi has already declined. The images associated with it become more ordinary, processed, or reduced.

When an element is in Constraint, its qi is further restricted. The images associated with it are lower in rank, smaller in scale, or more limited in function.

When an element is Dead, it has lost vitality and usability. Therefore, the images associated with it are dry, decayed, broken, exhausted, abandoned, or no longer useful.

This method helps the diviner move from abstract Five Elements theory into concrete image reading. In actual Six Lines interpretation, the strength state of a line can change not only its power, but also the kind of image it may represent.
