When I started my career in tech, “AI Engineer” wasn’t a job title. Definitely not a LinkedIn buzzword yet. If you wanted to work with machine learning, you got a computer science degree, suffered through a stats-heavy master’s, or took the nontraditional route and learned by building things until someone paid you for it.

So when I saw that Western Governors University launched a full Bachelor of Science in AI Engineering in May, I was intrigued. That’s something new. Not a certificate. Not a nanodegree. Not another “become an AI expert in 6 weeks” course with a suspicious discount timer that never runs out. An actual accredited bachelor’s degree — and reportedly the first at-scale, fully online one in the country where AI Engineering is a standalone undergraduate discipline.

And honestly? The more I read, the more interesting it got.

What Is This Program, Exactly?

WGU is the massive online nonprofit university famous for its competency-based model: no lectures on a schedule, no semesters in the traditional sense, no sitting through material you already know. You prove you’ve mastered a skill, and you move on. As fast as you want.

The new BSAIE (that’s the official acronym) takes that model and points it directly at the most in-demand job title in tech. The pitch, straight from their launch announcement: teach people to integrate machine learning models into real applications, automate AI workflows, manage AI infrastructure, and apply ethics and governance across the whole engineering lifecycle.

In other words — not “here’s what a neural network is.” More like “here’s how to ship one to production without setting anything on fire.” And that’s a pretty useful skill to have nowadays.

Here are some practical details:

  • 40 courses total, fully online, start dates the 1st of every month.
  • $4,400 per six-month term, flat rate (that’s $4,200 tuition + $200 for e-books and resources). Not per credit. Per term. Take as many courses as you can handle.
  • Average completion time is about 24 months, which puts the typical total cost around $18,400. Take three years and it’s $26,400. Still less than a single year at a lot of universities.
  • A Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals certification is baked into the degree at no extra cost or time.
  • No ACT. No SAT.

Let that flat-rate thing sink in for a second, because it’s the quietly radical part. The faster you learn, the less you pay. WGU literally markets it as “finish faster, pay less.” Imagine telling that to anyone with $80K of student debt from a four-year program where half the credits were mandatory filler.

What You Actually Study

I pulled up the full curriculum expecting fluff. I didn’t find much.

The math sequence is real engineering math: Calculus I through III, linear algebra, discrete math, and a course literally called “Mathematics of AI.” If you were hoping to become an AI engineer without touching a derivative and just going off vibes— this can be bad news.

Then the core: deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, machine learning DevOps, big data foundations, computer systems for AI, plus data structures and algorithms, computer architecture, and information security. It closes with a capstone where you take a real-world problem through the entire AI lifecycle — problem formulation, model development, testing, deployment, and monitoring, using industry MLOps tools like containerization and CI/CD pipelines.

Two things genuinely surprised me:

First, the languages: Python and… C#. Yes, C# — three courses of it, including a course called “AI Engineering with C#.” My guess is the Microsoft/Azure partnership runs deep here. Unusual for an AI curriculum (most are Python-only), but if you squint, it makes sense: an enormous amount of enterprise AI actually ships inside .NET shops, and nobody teaches for that.

Second, there’s General Chemistry. With a lab. In an AI degree. Some general-education requirements will apparently never go away.

The Catch

A quick heads-up before you start planning your career pivot: this is not a zero-to-hero program.

To get in, you need a high school diploma plus proof you can already handle the material — either college coursework with a completed precalculus course, or a solid high school GPA with advanced math, and in both cases, prior programming experience equivalent to a 3+ on the AP Computer Science A exam.

Translation: they expect you to show up already knowing how to code. This isn’t a bootcamp that promises to transform a total beginner. It’s a degree that assumes you’ve done the “hello, world” phase of your life already and are ready to learn more.

The nice loophole: if you’re missing a requirement, WGU Academy lets you knock out the precalculus and intro programming prerequisites for $99 per course. I’ve paid more for a Udemy course I never finished.

The other honest caveat — competency-based learning is a double-edged sword. Nobody is taking attendance. There are no live classmates dragging you to the finish line, just you, the material, and an assigned program mentor. The people who thrive in this model are disciplined self-starters. If you need external structure to function (no judgment — most humans do), the “go at your own pace” freedom can quietly become “go at no pace at all.”

Why This Actually Matters

For years, the paths into AI work were: an expensive traditional degree heavy on theory, a pricey bootcamp ($15K–$25K for a few months), or the self-taught gauntlet of scattered courses and projects.

This is something new — an accredited degree, priced like a bootcamp, focused on the unglamorous production skills employers actually scream about: deployment, pipelines, infrastructure, governance. Glassdoor puts AI engineer salaries at roughly $89K to $134K, and it’s one of the fastest-growing roles in tech right now. The math on an $18K degree against that isn’t hard to do.

Will it replace a computer science degree from a top school? No. Will hiring managers know what a “B.S. in AI Engineering” even is for the first few years? Also probably no — early graduates will be explaining their degree in every interview.

But being early cuts both ways. The first wave of graduates also enters the market holding a credential almost nobody else has, in a field where demand keeps outrunning supply.

Final Thoughts

I came into this expecting another opportunistic “AI” rebrand of an old data analytics program. What I found was a legitimately rigorous curriculum — real math, real systems, real deployment — priced and structured in a way that traditional universities should find mildly threatening.

If you can already code, you’re disciplined enough to be your own drill sergeant, and you’ve been waiting for a credential that matches where the industry is actually going — this might be worth a serious look.
