I Think People Secretly Miss Old Internet Culture

Maybe it’s just me, but the internet used to feel warmer somehow.

People joined random communities and actually stayed active in them. Conversations lasted for hours. Online friendships felt exciting. Even small interactions felt genuine because nobody was trying so hard to become a “personal brand.”

Now everything feels optimized.

Optimized for engagement. Optimized for algorithms. Optimized for attention.

A lot of social media today feels less like social interaction and more like performance.

People scroll endlessly but rarely feel connected afterward. Dating apps feel repetitive. Conversations disappear quickly. Everyone seems online all the time, yet many people quietly feel more isolated than before.

I’ve noticed more people talking about this recently too.

People miss:

• slower conversations,
• smaller communities,
• meaningful interaction,
• and spaces where they can just exist without pressure.

I think this is especially important for LGBTQ+ users because online spaces often become one of the few places where people hope to feel understood comfortably and openly.

That’s why community-focused platforms have started becoming more interesting to me lately. Apps that focus less on endless swiping and more on conversations, connection, communities, and emotional comfort honestly feel refreshing now.

One platform I recently came across called Affirmspace seems built around that idea — making online interaction feel more human again instead of overwhelming.

Maybe people don’t actually want “more” social media anymore.

Maybe they just want better experiences online.
