The Day Our Students Learned Kendo From Master Clem

A powerful seminar that brought discipline, spirit, and the way of the sword to PKSA Karate Royal Oak

Today felt like something special at our dojang. Our students had the chance to train in the art of Kendo under the guidance of Master Clem, a highly skilled and deeply respected instructor whose leadership left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance. What began as a simple seminar opened into a memorable lesson in discipline, focus, and the deeper meaning of martial arts.

Kendo is often described as the way of the sword, but the words do not fully capture the depth of the practice. It is sharp focus. It is timing and intent. It is spirit expressed in every movement. When taught by someone with Master Clem’s experience, the training becomes more than a technique. It becomes a moment students will remember.

A New Kind of Learning on the Floor

Most of our students train in Tang Soo Do. They practice forms, sparring, self defense, and the values that shape their growth. Kendo brought a whole new energy to the floor. Students learned how to hold a shinai correctly, how to step and glide with purpose, how to strike with intention instead of force.

Master Clem guided them through each movement with clarity and patience. She helped them understand distance, posture, awareness, and the importance of moving from their center. At one point the room went completely silent as everyone waited for her command. When she gave it, the floor erupted with powerful kihaps that echoed through the dojang. It was the kind of moment that stays with a martial artist.

Lessons That Go Far Beyond Technique

One of the most meaningful parts of the seminar was the mindset behind the training. Master Clem spoke about respect for the weapon, responsibility for one’s actions, and the character that martial artists should show at all times. Her words aligned perfectly with the values we teach at PKSA Karate Royal Oak, and the students were locked in as she shared her experiences.

You could see a shift in the room. Students stood a little taller. They listened a little more carefully. They understood that martial arts is never only about movement. It is about the person you become on the path.

A Truly Community Experience

The beauty of events like this is the way they bring people together. Parents watched proudly. Younger students admired the older belts. Adults trained alongside kids, each learning something new. The entire room felt united under a shared sense of excitement.

Bringing in guest instructors is one of the best ways to help students grow. It expands their perspective and gives them fresh inspiration. Master Clem, with her calm confidence and strong presence, gave our students a powerful example of leadership in martial arts.

Carrying the Experience Forward

As the seminar ended, the chatter in the room said everything. Students compared techniques, replayed their favorite moments, and expressed how much they enjoyed learning something outside their normal curriculum. The spark was there. Experiences like this help students see that martial arts is a lifelong journey with endless ways to learn and grow.

We are incredibly grateful to Master Clem for sharing her time, energy, and knowledge with us. Our students did not simply learn Kendo today. They experienced it in a meaningful and memorable way.

And that is something they will carry with them for a long time.
