When the Noise Around Us Becomes the Noise Within

Some days, the most challenging task is just getting started.

Lately, it has been difficult to get anything done.

I pick up my laptop, open the Medium app, and stare at a blank page. No words. No ideas. Nothing. The thoughts are somewhere in my head, but they refuse to come out.

As a writer, that feeling can be frustrating. Sometimes I feel like I know exactly what I want to say. But when I try to put it into words, everything slips away. My mind feels crowded and empty at the same time.

When the Words Refuse to Come

The pressure makes it worse.

A part of me keeps reminding me to write, create, and publish. Yet, a part of me longs to be left alone until the words come back on their own.

I have learned that trying to force creativity usually doesn’t work. Some days, writing flows effortlessly. Other days, even a single paragraph feels impossible.

For a while, I thought something was wrong with me. Maybe I had lost my inspiration. Maybe I was no longer capable of writing the way I used to.

The reality is that life impacts us more than we often recognize.

The Weight of Constant Bad News

There is so much happening around us, especially here in Nigeria.

Every day brings disturbing news. Stories of insecurity, kidnappings, and violence are common, leaving families living in fear. We scroll through our phones hoping for good news and are often met with the opposite.

It is exhausting.

Even when we are unaware, the weight of these realities can impact our minds, emotions, and focus. Sometimes the reason we cannot create, think clearly, or stay motivated is that we are mentally tired.

And honestly, that is how I have been feeling.

Taking Small Steps Forward

I am not completely okay yet.

The blank-page moments still happen. The uncertainty is still there. But I am no longer standing where I was a few days ago.

Instead of waiting for everything to feel perfect, I am choosing to take small steps forward and write a few sentences, finishing one task. I will show up even when I don't feel my best.

Maybe progress does not always look like giant leaps. Maybe sometimes it looks like opening the laptop, writing a few honest words, and refusing to give up.

Today, that is enough for me.

And if you have been feeling stuck, too, I hope you permit yourself to keep going at your own pace. One small step is still movement, and movement is still progress.
