The Degree I Never Wanted

Nobody hands you a syllabus for dating after thirty years of marriage.

Mine arrived one disappointment at a time.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t listening.

Lesson One: Listen Literally

My ex-husband said, “I’m 60% committed.”

I heard:

“He’s trying.”

What he actually said was:

“Forty percent of me has already left.”

That was my first lesson.

Lesson Two: Addiction Doesn’t Negotiate

I thought a medically supervised detox, three weeks of rehab, and a handful of AA meetings meant recovery had begun.

Addiction had other plans.

Love is no match for alcohol when the person drinking isn’t finished drinking.

Lesson Three: “Kinda Sorta” Is a Complete Sentence

“I’d like to see you when it kinda sorta works out.”, said someone I enjoyed seeing.

Translation: “You are somewhere between the dentist and doing laundry.”

Lesson Four: The First Lie Matters

He said he took the train because he was resting for a long drive the next day.

It sounded reasonable.

The real story was three DUI convictions, six months in jail, and a suspended driver’s license.

The first lie wasn’t the biggest one.

It was simply the easiest one to tell.

Lesson Five: Timing is Information

When someone invites you over for drinks at 9:00 p.m. on a second date, pay attention.

The invitation may not mean what you hope it means.

I mistook convenience for interest.

Lesson Six: Learn the Vocabulary

Polyamorous.

Sex-positive.

Ghosting.

Breadcrumbing.

Love bombing.

Apparently, divorce came with homework.

Final Exam: Learn to Notice the Quiet Things

The right man didn’t impress me with grand gestures.

He simply matched his stride to mine.

He carried what my left hand couldn’t.

He parked near the entrance without being reminded why.

By then, I finally understood the difference between excitement and kindness.
