Our Top 10 U.S. National Parks After Visiting All 63

A personal ranking based on scenic beauty, accessibility, activities, visitor services, and overall experience

At Artist Point overlooking the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, one of our favorite viewpoints from our journey to all 63 U.S. National Parks.

When we tell friends that we have visited all 63 U.S. National Parks, one of the first questions they ask is which parks we enjoyed the most.

Having visited all 63 parks over several years, we wanted to answer this question thoughtfully rather than rely on memory or personal bias. To approach this objectively, we created a matrix listing every park and assigned scores based on several criteria — scenic beauty, ease of access, activities we enjoyed, services available, and overall popularity.

No single criterion determined the rankings. Instead, we looked for parks that consistently performed well across all categories. While every national park has something unique to offer, the following ten parks rose to the top of our list.

Our Final Top 10 U.S. National Parks

1. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Montana & Idaho

Yellowstone stands apart for its incredible variety.

In a single park, you can experience geysers, hot springs, waterfalls, canyons, rivers, wildlife, scenic drives, and hiking trails. We enjoyed seeing Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic Spring, and plenty of wildlife, including bison and bears.

The park is vast and well-developed, with numerous viewpoints, boardwalks, visitor facilities, and activities suitable for visitors of all ages. We spent about a week across two visits and still felt there was more to explore.

For its unique geothermal features, abundant wildlife, diverse landscapes, and unforgettable experiences, Yellowstone earns our #1 ranking.

2. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Grand Canyon ranks #2 on our list for its iconic viewpoints, easy accessibility, and excellent visitor services.

Whether it is watching sunrise at Mather Point, exploring scenic viewpoints along the rim, or taking the park shuttle to places like Mohave and Pima Points, the park offers unforgettable experiences for visitors of all ages.

The vast canyon views, the sight of the Colorado River far below, and the colorful rock layers make this one of the most awe-inspiring places we have visited.

3. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee & North Carolina

The Great Smoky Mountains rank #3 on our list for their combination of scenic drives, waterfalls, wildlife, and easy hiking trails.

Across our two visits, we enjoyed exploring Cades Cove, Clingmans Dome, Laurel Falls, and the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. We were also fortunate to see bears, including cubs, during both trips.

The park is easily accessible, offers activities for all ages, and can be visited in different seasons, making it one of the most versatile parks in the country.

4. Yosemite National Park, California

Yosemite ranks #4 on our list for its incredible scenic beauty, easy access, and excellent visitor services such as the shuttle system.

The park offers a wide range of activities, from easy walks suitable for seniors to more challenging hikes for adventurous travelers.

Iconic sights like Tunnel View, El Capitan, Yosemite Falls, and Half Dome make this park truly special. It is a place where every visitor can find something to enjoy.

5. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Rocky Mountain earns its place in our Top 10 for its beautiful lakes, scenic drives, and easy-to-access viewpoints.

Trails like Bear Lake and Sprague Lake offered stunning mountain views without being too difficult. The Emerald Lake Trail was a bit challenging, but the views made the hike worth it.

Driving along Trail Ridge Road was a major highlight, with wide views of the mountains and several scenic stops. We also enjoyed short hikes to Alberta Falls and the Alluvial Fan.

Across two visits, the park gave us a great mix of relaxing walks and impressive scenery, making it very enjoyable.

6. Zion National Park, Utah

Zion earns its place in our Top 10 for its massive red rock cliffs, scenic canyon views, and well-organized shuttle system that makes exploring easy and stress-free.

Even without doing the most challenging hikes, we experienced the beauty of the park through the Riverside Walk, Grotto Trail, and the Kayenta Trail to Emerald Pools.

While we chose not to attempt The Narrows or Angels Landing, Zion still delivered unforgettable scenery and memorable hikes.

7. Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Grand Teton earns its place in our Top 10 for its mountain peaks, peaceful lakes, and beautiful river views.

Across our two visits, we enjoyed scenic lookouts, the Jenny Lake and Hidden Falls trails, Snake River drives, and Signal Mountain.

Spots like Oxbow Bend and Schwabacher Landing stood out for wildlife sightings and perfect mountain reflections. The park is easy to explore, well organized, and offers many memorable views without long hikes.

8. Acadia National Park, Maine

Acadia stands out for its mix of ocean views, mountains, lakes, and clearly marked trails — all within a compact area.

Walking the Ocean Path, enjoying the views from Cadillac Mountain, and hiking around Jordan Pond were some of our favorite moments. The famous popovers at Jordan Pond House were also a special treat.

The park offers a good variety of activities without long drives between places, which made our visit enjoyable and relaxed. Another plus is that visitors from much of the East Coast can drive to the park.

9. Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

Mount Rainier is in our Top 10 for its stunning mountain views, colorful wildflower meadows, peaceful lakes, and easy-to-reach trails.

Places like Paradise, Sunrise, and Tipsoo Lake gave us amazing views of Mount Rainier, while waterfalls such as Narada and Christine Falls made our visits even more memorable.

When choosing between Mount Rainier and Olympic for our Top 10, we reflected on our experiences in both. Olympic has forests, beaches, and mountains, but the attractions are spread far apart. Mount Rainier offered beautiful scenery, good visitor facilities, and many enjoyable experiences within a shorter time. It is also easy to reach from Seattle and has a lively atmosphere that we enjoyed.

10. Glacier National Park, Montana

Glacier earns a place in our Top 10 for its clear lakes, tall mountains, wildflower meadows, and famous scenic roads.

The legendary Going-to-the-Sun Road, with its high viewpoints and wide mountain views, offers one of the most memorable drives in the national park system.

The park also combines beautiful lakes, waterfalls, and mountain scenery in a way that makes every stop feel special. Even during our relatively short visit, Glacier left a lasting impression.

Looking Back on All 63 Parks

Completing visits to all 63 U.S. National Parks has been one of the most rewarding experiences of our retirement years.

While these ten parks rose to the top of our rankings, every national park offered something memorable. Some surprised us with their scenery, others with their wildlife, history, or unique landscapes.

We hope this list helps fellow travelers decide where to begin their own national park adventures. No matter which park you choose, there is a good chance it will leave you with memories that last a lifetime.
