Teamwork Through Music

. . . a brief nostalgic journey through time

As I’m listening to Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony for the hundredth-plus time, I am brought back to the memory of the most fantastic experience of teamwork I’ve ever known in my entire life!

There is nothing that compares with the teamwork . . . the sense of harmony, unity, comradery, and precision - of performing in a symphony orchestra!

Even though I loved my solo performing as a concert pipe organist and pianist — (although I really preferred my role as an accompanist to soloists or all-sized groups) — the symphony playing was actually my favorite music role.

Although my role as a double-bassist was primarily foundational — (and normally placed physically at the back of the orchestra) — I was able to somehow experience performing all those other roles as realistically as my own.

Talk about teamwork!. . . real teamwork!. . . wow, was that ever an exhilarating feeling!

Even as I listen today I am transported — (with that same euphoric feeling as back in those days of playing with the top chosen teenage musicians in our state) — joyfully to the prestigious Royce Hall at UCLA!

Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony has never sounded any greater than it did on that memorable day so many years ago!

. . . and the memories and feelings of that and many other such days have never faded, even though with age my actual performing days have.

. . . But what a wonderful journey it has been!

Let us be as a symphony orchestra in bringing forth the ‘music of the spheres’ through our lighted and loving teamwork in this wonderful new creation in which we are honored and privileged to partake.
