Eyeing the Economic Potential of Healthy Vegetables, Untag Students Train Pegirian 2 Residents on Hydroponic Nutrient Management

SURABAYA — The healthy lifestyle trend that drives high demand for pesticide-free

vegetables opens new business opportunities for urban communities. Highlighting this

economic potential, Group NR 4 students of Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 Surabaya carried

out a community service activity in the form of training on cultivating pakcoy hydroponics

using the Deep Flow Technique (DFT) system in the Pegirian 2 area.

The main coverage of this activity highlights how modern agriculture can be developed into a

promising household-scale business. In the educational session, students did not only explain

the basic theories of cultivation but also provided an understanding of operational efficiency.

One of the crucial factors determining the quality and selling value of hydroponic vegetables

is nutrient management.

To ensure residents are capable of producing harvests with high economic value, the students

held a direct practice session regarding plant nutrient measurement. Residents were taught

how to mix vitamins and measure the concentration of water to match the specific needs of

pakcoy plants at each phase of their growth.

Education regarding the efficient use of nutrient materials is very important to suppress

operational costs. If nutrient levels are well maintained, residents can produce premium-quality vegetables that can be consumed personally to save on kitchen expenses, or marketed

to the surrounding neighborhood to increase family income. Through this community service

activity, the Pegirian 2 community is expected to be able to seize economic opportunities

from simple hydroponic installations in their homes.
