The Hidden Treasure

“…However, we can say that concealment pertains to where one wants to see and understand but does not see or understand. At that time, we can say that something is hidden from him. Moreover, the measure of concealment is measured by the need to know. Hence, when a person has no need for knowledge, it cannot be said about that person that he is suffering from the concealment.

For example, if a person has to work somewhere only half an hour every day and receive his salary once a month, he must believe that he will be paid although he still did not see anyone being paid. Hence, he believes in the company although it is hidden from him whether or how the company will pay the salary, since no one knows this company where he wants to work.

If he wants to work more than half an hour, he has a greater need to know that the company pays the salary on time. Thus, if he heard bad rumors about the company, he suffers more from the concealment. And if he wants to work day and night, he certainly feels a greater concealment because he has a greater need to know whether he will receive his salary as promised.

Since the kingdom of heaven is above reason, everyone suffers from the concealment. However, for those who want to work for the sake of the Creator, the concealment is greater because they have a greater need to know, since the body keeps asking “What is this work for you?” It follows that this question is always understood according to how much a person wants to work completely for the sake of the Creator…”

There is a painful contradiction at the heart of spiritual work.

We are told to act, to exert ourselves, to study, to connect, to invest in others, to overcome our laziness, our criticism, our indifference, and our self-love. Yet at the same time, we are denied the one thing we desperately want: proof that any of it is working.

Day after day, year after year, we invest effort and often feel poorer than before.

We try to connect and discover more rejection.

We study and discover more confusion.

We pray and discover more helplessness.

We search for love and uncover hatred.

We seek faith and find doubt.

If spiritual progress is real, why is it hidden?

Why are we not allowed to see the fruits of our labor?

The answer is both devastating and beautiful.

Because if we saw even the smallest spiritual reward generated by our efforts, our journey would end immediately.

A person imagines that he wants the Creator.

He imagines that he wants truth.

He imagines that he wants bestowal.

But if he were suddenly shown the true spiritual profit accumulated through a single day of genuine effort, he would discover something frightening.

He wants the reward.

Not the Creator.

The pleasure.

Not the transformation.

The treasure.

Not the One who gives it.

A single drop of spiritual Light contains more fulfillment than all the pleasures of this world combined. Compared to it, every achievement, every possession, every honor, every physical delight becomes insignificant.

If that reward were revealed prematurely, we would cling to it instantly.

We would stop growing.

We would stop searching.

We would stop changing.

We would take our portion and go home.

This is why concealment exists.

Not as punishment.

As protection.

The Creator hides the results of our work from us because He wants to give us something infinitely greater than pleasure.

He wants to give us Himself.

And to receive Him, we must first acquire the ability to love what He loves rather than merely enjoy what He gives.

This changes our understanding of everything.

Suddenly the apparent emptiness of spiritual work becomes meaningful.

The fact that we do not feel progress does not mean that nothing is happening.

Quite the opposite.

The greatest transformations occur in silence.

A seed does not witness its own growth beneath the soil.

An infant does not understand the changes occurring within its body.

A person sleeping does not observe the processes that restore life to every cell.

Likewise, the soul develops in hiddenness.

The spiritual accounting is concealed.

The profit accumulates beyond our awareness.

The treasure grows while we feel poor.

And this hidden accumulation is made possible through something even more surprising.

Actions.

We often imagine spirituality as a world of lofty intentions.

We believe that everything depends upon pure motives and exalted inner states.

But the truth is far more humbling.

We begin with actions.

Not because our intentions are pure.

They are not.

Not because our hearts are corrected.

They are not.

Not because we already love others.

We do not.

We begin by acting.

We attend.

We study.

We participate.

We connect.

We help.

We invest.

We try.

Our intention may still be entirely selfish.

We may be seeking knowledge, success, respect, certainty, comfort, or spiritual attainment for ourselves.

Yet the action itself already has value.

Why?

Because every genuine action directed toward the goal places us under the influence of a force greater than ourselves.

The correcting Light.

The Light does not wait for us to become worthy.

The Light makes us worthy.

The Light does not come because we have corrected ourselves.

The Light comes because we have placed ourselves where correction can occur.

This is why a person cannot simply sit alone and wait for transformation.

The environment becomes essential.

Without it, the desire for spirituality remains tiny and weak.

The intellect alone cannot save us.

The mind can understand countless spiritual concepts and remain completely powerless before a single emotional state.

When desire awakens, the intellect serves it.

When fear awakens, the intellect serves it.

When pride awakens, the intellect serves it.

When jealousy awakens, the intellect serves it.

The intellect is not the king we imagine it to be.

Its true role is much smaller and much more practical.

It helps us choose our environment.

It helps us recognize what is important.

It helps us place ourselves where the Light can influence us.

That is all.

The actual correction comes from elsewhere.

And this is why the environment becomes the most precious gift on the path.

The friends, the group, the books, the teacher, the shared yearning toward a higher reality — these create a field of influence that continuously enlarges our desire.

We borrow importance from one another.

We borrow hope from one another.

We borrow faith from one another.

Most importantly, we borrow the longing for something greater than ourselves.

This borrowed desire attracts the Light.

The Light performs the correction.

And gradually something extraordinary begins to happen.

The actions remain.

But the intention changes.

At first, we act to receive.

Later, we act because we cannot bear separation from the Creator.

At first, we seek fulfillment.

Later, we seek resemblance.

At first, we want spiritual pleasure.

Later, we want to bring contentment to the Source of that pleasure.

The action may appear identical from the outside.

The entire revolution occurs within the intention.

This is why spirituality is called a world of desires.

Not a world of bodies.

Not a world of external movements.

Not a world of appearances.

A world of desires.

A world where everything is measured according to what the heart truly seeks.

And so the path continues.

The reward remains hidden.

The progress remains hidden.

The treasure remains hidden.

Yet every effort is recorded.

Every struggle matters.

Every attempt to connect matters.

Every moment of study matters.

Every effort to rise above oneself matters.

Nothing is lost.

Nothing disappears.

Nothing is forgotten.

One day, after the necessary transformation has occurred, the concealment will end.

The accumulated treasure will be revealed.

The soul will see what was gained through every tear, every confusion, every descent, every effort that seemed fruitless.

Then a person will discover that he was never empty.

Never abandoned.

Never standing still.

The Creator was secretly collecting every effort and turning it into eternity.

And the greatest miracle will be this:

By the time the treasure is finally revealed, the person will no longer want it for himself.

He will want only the One who was hiding it.
