Why Military Personnel at 5,000 Metres Need More Than Just Acclimatisation Time

The Indian Army maintains posts above 5,000 metres. The air at that altitude has the same 21% oxygen it does at sea level — but barometric pressure is approximately half. Each breath delivers roughly half the oxygen molecules. The physiological consequences for unacclimatised personnel are severe: impaired judgement, reduced reaction time, acute mountain sickness, and in extreme cases, fatal pulmonary or cerebral oedema.

Acclimatisation helps over time. But personnel rotate. Logistics staff, specialists, and reinforcements arrive regularly and need to be effective immediately, not after weeks of physiological adaptation.

The engineering solution: oxygen enrichment

Raising the indoor oxygen concentration from 21% to 27–30% at 5,000m restores the oxygen partial pressure experienced by occupants to levels comparable to 2,500–3,000m — where most personnel can function near-normally without special acclimatisation. This is achieved by PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) technology that uses lithium-exchanged zeolite to selectively adsorb nitrogen from compressed air, producing an oxygen-enriched output that is distributed through a calibrated room distribution network.

The Neometrix Oxygen Enrichment Facility does exactly this — available in 80, 130, and 230 LPM configurations for different room sizes, with smart PLC automation, real-time O2 and CO2 monitoring, SCADA remote monitoring, CO2 exhaust, nasal cannula ports, and diesel/solar-hybrid backup for off-grid high-altitude deployment. Designed for sub-zero Himalayan operating conditions.

For military posts, research stations, and medical facilities at extreme altitude, it is not a luxury — it is operational capability infrastructure.
