Selection process: three stages

Stage 1: Preliminary examination

Objective, 120 questions, 2 hours.

• General Studies: 100 questions

• Mental Aptitude and Reasoning: 20 questions

Stage 2: Main examination

Six written papers, all evaluated for the final merit:

• Paper 1: General Studies (History, Geography, Polity, Economy)

• Paper 3: Punjab-specific General Knowledge (History of Punjab, economy, culture, famous personalities, government schemes)

Salary of an SDM in Punjab

Punjab PCS officers are placed in the state’s pay scale, based on the 7th Pay Commission.

• Basic Pay : Rs. 56,100 to Rs. 1,77,500
• Post: Higher Group A posts
• Pay Level: Level 11 to 12
• Basic Pay : Rs. 67,700 to Rs. 2,08,700

Monthly salary breakdown for an entry-level SDM in Punjab:

• Basic Pay : Rs. 56,100 (approx.)
• Dearness Allowance (about 55% of basic) : Rs. 30,855 (approx.)
• House Rent Allowance : Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 13,000 (varies by city)
• Travel and Other Allowances : Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 8,000
• Gross Monthly: Rs. 97,000 to Rs. 1,05,000

Net in-hand after NPS, income tax, and other deductions works out to approximately Rs. 80,000 to Rs. 90,000 per month at entry level.

Punjab PCS vs IAS: the real difference

The fundamental difference is in reach and progression.

An IAS officer is an all-India service officer. They can be posted anywhere in India, go on central deputation, and handle national-level roles. Senior IAS officers reach Pay Level 17 (Cabinet Secretary level).

A Punjab PCS officer works within Punjab. They handle state-level administration. Promotion is through the state’s Departmental Promotion Committee. Senior PCS officers can be promoted to IAS through state quota promotions, which typically happens after 8 to 15 years of service, depending on vacancies and performance.

For someone who wants to stay and serve in Punjab, PCS is often the better choice: familiar geography, family proximity, and the ability to implement change in communities you grew up in.

How to prepare for Punjab PCS

Punjab GK is critical. Unlike UPSC, which tests national-level knowledge, Punjab PCS Mains has a full paper on Punjab-specific topics. Know the history of Punjab (Sikh history, British period, partition, post-independence), the state economy (agriculture, industry), current government schemes, famous personalities from Punjab, and local geographical features.

Punjabi language: One Mains paper is in Punjabi. If you are from Punjab, this should be manageable. Practice writing in Gurmukhi script if you are rusty.

Optional subject: Choose wisely. Pick the subject you studied at graduation and are most comfortable with. This is a significant marks contributor.
