I Looked Back at My Journal, and It Changed the Way I Think About Writing
Today, I spent some time reading my journal entries from the past few months.
I didn’t expect much. I thought I’d simply remember what I had done.
Instead, I was amazed.
Looking back at my own words reminded me why journaling is one of the best habits I have ever started. It made me realize that I want to make daily journaling a permanent part of my life. Insha’Allah, I’ll continue this habit.
There is something unique about writing.
I can’t fully explain it, but writing has a kind of power that is difficult to put into words. When you read something you wrote months or even years ago, it creates a strange but beautiful feeling. It feels like you’re meeting an older version of yourself.
There is a special kind of nostalgia attached to our own words, whether they were written in a notebook or typed on a screen.
I’ve noticed that daily journaling improves my thinking more than almost anything else. Unfortunately, I stopped journaling for a while, and I genuinely regret that decision.
Now I’m back.
As soon as I started writing again, I remembered why I loved this habit in the first place.
Journaling helps me think more clearly. It allows me to slow down, reflect on my experiences, and capture lessons that I would probably forget otherwise.
It doesn’t take much time, but its impact lasts much longer than the few minutes it takes to write.
That’s why I honestly recommend journaling to everyone.
You may not notice its value today, but one day you’ll read your old thoughts, and you’ll understand why it was worth every minute.
Beyond journaling itself, I have a bigger reason for staying consistent.
I want to become financially successful.
Not because I want success for its own sake, but because I want to help my family.
I want to make my parents proud.
I want to buy them a house, give them a comfortable life, and remove financial worries from their shoulders. My mother and my sisters have sacrificed so much for my education, and I will never forget that.
I recently completed my second-semester final exams, and now it’s summer vacation.
But while I’m enjoying the break, my mother is already worried about how she’ll pay my next semester’s university fee.
That thought stays with me.
Recently, I also learned a difficult lesson.
Because of a mistake in my documents, I couldn’t receive the Honhaar Scholarship.
It was my mistake.
For some time, I kept thinking about what would have happened if I had caught that mistake earlier.
Then I realized something simple.
I cannot go back and change the past.
All I can do is learn from it, accept responsibility, and keep moving forward.
Maybe that’s another reason I love journaling.
It reminds me where I’ve been.
It helps me understand where I am today.
And it keeps me focused on where I want to go tomorrow.
Hopefully, years from now, I’ll come back and read these words again.
And when I do, I hope I’ll smile and remember that this was one of the moments when I decided to keep moving forward.
