Whispers of the Unseen: Remembering the Old Ways of Divination
Spirituality Simplified Series

There is a quiet voice that lives beneath every tarot card, every rune, every whisper of wind and birdcall. A voice not of prediction, but of memory. It stirs in the marrow, calling us back to the times when divination was not entertainment or ornament, but a vital thread in the weaving of life.
In the old ways, to divine was to listen and observe. To the land, to the breath between words, to the way the smoke curled from the hearth fire and the manner in which the raven circled overhead. Each sign was a message, each message a reminder that the worlds are entwined, and that we, too, are threads in the great tapestry of all that exists.
Our ancestors did not ask, What will happen? They asked, What is the shape of the path before me, and how may I walk it with strength? The runes were carved not to command destiny, but to see its threads and weavings. The cards, the bones, the water’s surface; all were mirrors to the unseen currents, helping us understand the patterns unfolding in our lives, so that we might walk with more awareness and intent.
Not Fortune-Telling, but Dialogue
When most people hear the word divination, they think of someone flipping tarot cards or casting runes to predict the future. Will I get the job? Do they love me? Will I be rich?
The truth is that real divination does not seek the future. It listens to the present. It listens to the threads of Wyrd, the great web of fate and becoming, to sense what is already echoing in the bones of your life.
In the Old Norse world, to divine was to listen to what already was. The future was not a distant place, but a pattern unfolding. A shape already forming in the well of memory. Those called to read that pattern, such as the völur, did not see themselves as fortune tellers. They were memory keepers, listeners, and seers of what others could not see.
Divination was never about commanding the future to reveal itself. It was a dialogue between the seen and unseen worlds. A question placed carefully and respectfully, into the hands of a seer or a wise one, and an answer that might come as a vision, a sign in nature, or a pattern in cast lots, runes, or cards.
The purpose was not control. It was clarity. To know where we stood in the weave of Wyrd and how best to act from that knowing.
Divination Tools Are Gateways
Whether a bundle of runes carved from wood, a spread of tarot cards, or the movement of clouds across the moon, the tools of divination are never the power themselves. They are the gateways, the tangible forms through which the intangible could speak.
When you hold a tarot card, you are holding centuries of layered meaning. The colours, the numbers, the symbols all speaking at once, like a woven story. It is a language of pattern and archetype that connects the reader not just to the seeker’s present moment, but to a lineage of wisdom stretching back through time.
The runes, carved by our ancestors into bone, stone, and wood, carry a deep resonance beyond their shapes. Each rune is not just a letter but a living symbol, a thread in the great tapestry of life. They embody natural forces, ancestral memory, and spiritual truths. When cast or drawn, the runes are not random marks but keys that open the door to insight and guidance. They invite a conversation between the self and the unseen, revealing the hidden patterns in the unfolding of Wyrd. Like the tarot, they are a bridge to the old wisdom, calling us to remember the language of the land and the spirits who dwell within it.
The Völva’s Art of Divination
The völva’s art of divination was never limited to carved runes. Her sight and voice moved through many sacred practices, each a doorway to the hidden realms and threads of Wyrd. Through seiðr, she entered trance states, called forth by chant, song, or the steady beat of a drum, to journey between worlds, weaving prophecy and visions from the unseen.
She read the language of nature itself, the flight of birds, the restless movements of animals, the gentle winds wafting through the trees, and the shifting clouds across the sky. Each sign was a whispered message from the ancestors, the landvættir, and the deities watching over the living. In these subtle murmurs, she found guidance and warnings alike.
The völva served as a living bridge, hearing the voices of those beyond the veil and relaying their cryptic wisdom through poetic words and visions. Sometimes she cast lots, small bones or stones, allowing chance to become meaning, the shape of the unseen made visible.
Dreams held their place in her craft too, sacred spaces prepared by ritual to invite messages carried on the night’s breath. In her hands, the staff, amulets, and sacred herbs were not mere tools, but extensions of her connection to the deep mysteries, offering protection and power as she wove her spell.
Every method was part of the same sacred dialogue, an act of listening, weaving, and remembering that required reverence and presence. The völva’s divination was the weaving of Wyrd itself, a dance between the worlds that called us back to the ancient rhythms of fate and becoming.
Why the Old Ways Still Matter
There may be a part of you that has always known that pop culture spirituality is not the whole story. Perhaps you have seen readers online pull cards like party tricks, coated in pastel filters and quick promises. Maybe you have felt that subtle ache, that this isn’t quite what divination was meant to be.
That discomfort is your knowing.
You were never meant to use divination. You were meant to be in conversation with it. Like all things sacred, it is reciprocal. Living. Enchanted.
The völur, the seers and staff-carriers of the old ways, knew this. They worked in trance, in song, in service. They read bones, clouds, runes, dreams. They never asked: What will happen to me? Instead, they asked: What must I know? What must I remember? What does Wyrd reveal now?
Open yourself to divination as a sacred dialogue, a bridge between worlds. Listen with reverence to the whispers of the earth, the unseen realms, and the quiet voice within. Step softly into this ancient rhythm and walk your path with clear sight and an open spirit.
